About the role

The Athletic Assistant supports the delivery of athletic programming by assisting with league operations, program implementation, and participant engagement. This role involves ensuring safety, organization, and a positive experience for youth participants.

Mission Statement The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast is to ensure every child has mentors and champions in life. Organization Structure and Interfaces Position Reports To: Director of BGC Active Direct Reports: Volunteers, Interns Primary Interfaces: Youth Members, Families, Club Staff, General Managers, Community Partners, Officials, Coaches Hours: 20–25 hours per week with a flexible schedule based on seasonal programming. Typical Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 2:00 PM–7:30 PM with evenings and weekends as needed for leagues, tournaments, and special events.

Position Summary

The Athletic Assistant supports the successful delivery of Boys & Girls Clubs athletic programming by assisting with league operations, program implementation, facility readiness, volunteer coordination, and participant engagement.

Working closely with the Director of BGC Active and Athletic Coordinator, this position helps create safe, organized, and engaging sports experiences that promote positive youth development.

Success is measured through dependable execution, program quality, participant experience, operational support, and adherence to organizational standards.

Maintain Mandated Reporter certification and complete annual Child Abuse Prevention training.

Participate in Emergency Preparedness training and follow emergency response procedures.

Athletic Program Operations Support league operations including scheduling, setup, game-day logistics, and facility preparation.

Assist with opening and closing program locations.

Ensure athletic equipment and facilities are clean, organized, and safe.

Support volunteer coaches, officials, and staff during practices and games.

Help create a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants.

Immediately communicate safety concerns, injuries, or operational issues to leadership.

Program Quality & Participant Experience Promote positive sportsmanship and character development.

Encourage participation while creating a fun, safe, and engaging environment.

Help ensure programs meet organizational quality expectations.

Team & Volunteer Support Provide direction and assistance to volunteers during events.

Work collaboratively with Club staff to ensure smooth program operations.

Support leadership by identifying operational improvements and addressing concerns proactively.

Family & Community Engagement Foster positive relationships with families.

Represent the Club professionally during games, tournaments, and community events.

Operational Accountability Maintain inventory of athletic equipment and supplies.

Follow all organizational policies and Standard Operating Procedures.

Maintain accurate records related to leagues, volunteers, and programming.

Assist with transportation and facility logistics when assigned.

Provide support at multiple site locations throughout the year.

Facility & Equipment Management Maintain clean, organized, and safe athletic spaces.

Report maintenance or repair needs promptly.

Help ensure facilities consistently reflect organizational standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required.

Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, or related coursework preferred.

Minimum one year of experience working with youth sports or recreation.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Ability to work evenings and weekends.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

CPR and First Aid Certification preferred or obtained upon hire.

Must meet all organizational background screening requirements.

Must report suspected child abuse in accordance with California law.

Valid TB clearance in accordance with organizational requirements.

Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to stand, walk, run, bend, reach, lift, carry, push, or pull objects up to 50 pounds while leading or supporting athletic activities in indoor and outdoor environments.

Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is required, with a preference for coursework in Kinesiology or related fields. Candidates should have at least one year of experience working with youth sports or recreation and possess strong communication skills.
