  • SUMMARY: Member of child development a center parent/staff team which provides appropriate early childhood experiences for children. Assists teaching staff to ensure Program requirements are met. Promotion to Teacher Assistant II is automatic upon supervisory receipt of proof of educational qualifications.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES: PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Assists teachers or other education staff in the development and implementation of center and classroom activities. Serves as an appropriate model for positive adult/child interactions. Ensures a safe, healthy, supervised environment for young children that are in compliance with all applicable health and safety standards. May be required to assist teachers or other staff in carrying out family services activities that may include: home visits; record keeping; and other communication with parents. Assists teachers in creating and conducting developmentally appropriate group and individualized curriculum. Assume progressive responsibilities to carry out designated child screening and assessment procedures. In conjunction with teachers use this information to develop and implement a program responsive to each child’s needs. Actively pursue identification of and services for children with disabilities. May be required to assist with transportation of children. Help to maintain current, accurate, organized, written records and reports as required. Maintain confidentiality regarding client and personnel issues, information, and records. Participate, along with other staff members, in the daily cleaning and maintenance of the center. Encourage parents to participate in center educational and social activities.

Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: LEVEL I: Minimum six core units in Early Childhood Education with a “C” grade or better; previous experience in a licensed child care program; previous experience in a licensed child care facility, desirable. LEVEL II: Minimum 12 core units in Early Childhood Education with a “C” grade or better; previous experience in a licensed child care facility, desirable. Positions assigned to work with infants and/or toddlers are required to complete a minimum of three additional units of Early Childhood Education course work with a “C” grade or better relating to infants and/or toddlers. Other Requirements State regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis test, and verified fingerprint and criminal records clearance before beginning work. Bilingual, bi-literate, English/Spanish, English/Punjabi, English/Hmong, and/or other language ability based on program needs is required. Education must have previously included or must be able to successfully complete course work in child abuse, substance abuse and domestic violence within one year of date of hire. Possession of or ability to obtain Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification within first 60 days of work; must maintain current status. Possession of a valid drivers’ license; current personal vehicle insurance, or safe driving record sufficient to ensure insurability through Agency policy. Must be able to drive to conduct agency business. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Bilingual, biliterate (English/Spanish, English/Punjabi, and/or other language ability are desired, not required, based on program needs). Ability to add, subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight, and distance. Basic computer skills desirable. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Possession of or ability to obtain Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification within first sixty 60 days of work; must maintain current status. Possession of a valid California driver license; current personal vehicle insurance or safe driving record sufficient to ensure insurability through Agency policy. May be required to use personal vehicle in successful completion of job duties and responsibilities. State regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis test, and verified fingerprint and criminal record clearance before beginning work. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell; and occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
