Job description

Portledge School seeks a dedicated and enthusiastic Girls Varsity Hockey Assistant Coach to support all aspects of the varsity girls hockey program. The Assistant Coach will work closely with the Head Coach to develop student-athletes, foster a positive team culture, and uphold the mission and values of Portledge Athletics. This role is part time, seasonal and reports to the Director of Athletics.

The ideal candidate is passionate about hockey, committed to the growth of young athletes, and understands the important role athletics plays in developing confidence, leadership, resilience, and character.

Responsibilities

And duties:

  • Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting practices, games, and team activities.
  • Teach and reinforce hockey fundamentals, individual skills, and team systems.
  • Support the development of student-athletes both on and off the ice.
  • Promote a culture of sportsmanship, accountability, teamwork, and respect.
  • Assist with game preparation, video review, scouting, and player development plans as needed.
  • Provide instruction and feedback during practices and competitions.
  • Help supervise student-athletes during practices, games, team travel, and school-sponsored events.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.
  • Support communication with players, families, and the Athletic Department.
  • Ensure compliance with all school, league, and safety regulations.
  • Contribute to building a competitive and positive program that reflects the values of Portledge School.

Qualifications

And skills:

  • Previous hockey coaching and/or competitive playing experience required.
  • Knowledge of hockey skills, systems, and player development.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach and Athletic Department.
  • Experience working with high school-aged students preferred.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, positive, and supportive team environment.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).

Season

Season will start approximately around November 1, 2026 and end approximately around March 15, 2027.

Requirements

Requires previous hockey coaching or competitive playing experience and strong leadership skills. Preference is given to candidates with experience working with high school students and current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
