About the role

The intern will implement the Student Support Volunteer Tutoring Program by pairing community volunteers with resettled youth. Responsibilities include onboarding volunteers, identifying eligible students, and documenting progress in program databases.

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.

Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Youth and Education Intern will support the Youth and Education team by implementing the Student Support Volunteer Tutoring Program.

This program pairs community volunteers with recently resettled youth in middle and high school to work as a tutor/tutee pair.

Pairs meet for at least one hour a week for a minimum of 8 weeks.

The intern will oversee day-to-day implementation of the program, including onboarding new volunteers, identifying eligible youth, pairing them, and documenting progress.

This is an excellent opportunity for the intern to be directly involved in the implementation of a client-facing program.

This internship is ideal for someone interested in teaching, social work, working with youth, or anyone interested in learning how to run a non-profit youth-focused program.

Responsibilities

Make phone calls to recently arrived families to identify students interested in the program. Onboard and interview potential community volunteers Complete pairings for new volunteers with eligible students promptly according to demographic and location matching criteria. Coordinate initial meeting times between the student, volunteer, and program supervisor. If available, facilitate the initial introduction meeting between the tutor and student. Build positive relationships with refugee youth and create a fun and supportive environment. Grow and expand program reach through outreach and new initiatives. Document and case note each step of the process in the databases used by the program. Other related duties as assigned, including monthly office support & reception coverage REQUIREMENTS: Able to accomplish tasks efficiently and in a timely manner Self-starter who is able to complete project goals Successful completion of IRC background check Commitment to full internship term (10 weeks at 10-15 hours per week) PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS All International Rescue Committee workers must adhere to the core values and principles outlined in IRC Way - Standards for Professional Conduct.
