Job Summary

Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for creating and leading safe, engaging, and inclusive fitness classes that support the health and wellness goals of University Recreation participants. Instructors design and adapt class experiences to accommodate a variety of fitness levels, abilities, and participant needs while providing accurate fitness education and promoting proper exercise technique. Through positive participant interactions, instructors foster a welcoming environment, encourage healthy lifestyles, and serve as ambassadors for University Recreation Fitness Programs and Services.

Group Exercise Instructors are expected to maintain safe and clean fitness spaces, uphold University Recreation policies and procedures, and respond appropriately to emergency situations in accordance with established protocols. Instructors are committed to continuous professional development by maintaining current industry knowledge and actively participating in required trainings, meetings, and in-service opportunities. Additional responsibilities may be assigned to support the overall success of Fitness Programs and University Recreation.

Required

Minimum Qualifications

Current student at The University of Alabama. Must have a valid, NCCA-recognized group fitness certification or Personal Training certification OR have graduated UREC’s Instructor Training Course. Recognized certification bodies: such as ACE, AFAA, ISSA, NASM, Yoga Alliance, or Pilates NCPT. Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certification, or ability to complete certification requirements upon hire. Ability to work with adults from beginner to advanced levels of fitness experience. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be available to work minimum of 2 hours per week. Must be able to substitute a minimum of 2 classes per semester. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include some early mornings, lunchtime, evenings, and/or weekends as needed.

Skills and Knowledge

In-depth understanding and application of fitness methodologies and training techniques. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and exercise science to guide participants safely and effectively. Excellent communication skills to instruct and motivate individuals or groups during fitness sessions. Customer-focused attitude with the ability to provide a positive and encouraging environment for participants.

Preferred Qualifications

1-2 semesters of general coursework in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Science, or related field. Previous work experience in strength training, personal training, or fitness facility environment.

Enrollment Requirements

Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
