Job Summary

Works under the supervision of the Fitness Program Coordinator to design safe and effective personal training programs for individual clients, adapting the strength training program to each member’s specific needs and abilities. Instructs members in the strength training principles, training procedures, and exercise techniques in a fun, safe, and effective manner that meet University Recreation guidelines, and provides an encouraging and motivating environment while helping participants to achieve their fitness goals. May also be assigned to train partner/multiple-client sessions or group personal training instruction.

Required

Minimum Qualifications

Current student at The University of Alabama. Valid NCCA-recognized personal training certification (such as NSCA, ACE, NASM, ISSA, or ACSM). Must have current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) weeks of employment. Ability to work with adults from beginner to advanced levels of fitness experience. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be available to work minimum of 6 hours per week. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include some early mornings, nights, and/or weekends as needed.

Skills and Knowledge

Thorough knowledge and application of strength training principles, training procedures, and exercise techniques. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

1-2 semesters of general coursework in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Science, or related field. Previous work experience in strength training, personal training, or fitness facility environment.

Enrollment Requirements

Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
