Position Summary

The Evening & Weekend College at Livingstone College invites applications for a part-time adjunct professor to teach Religious Studies courses for adult and non-traditional learners.

The successful candidate will provide academically rigorous, engaging instruction in evening, weekend, hybrid, and/or online formats.

Courses may explore biblical studies, theology, world religions, ethics, church history, and the role of religion in society.

Proficiency with Blackboard is required for course communication, assignments, grading, and other learning activities.

The adjunct professor will support students who are balancing their education with professional, family, and community responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned Religious Studies courses in accordance with approved course descriptions, learning outcomes, curricula, and institutional academic standards.
  • Develop and facilitate engaging, student-centered learning experiences that promote critical thinking, informed dialogue, ethical reflection, and respect for diverse religious traditions and perspectives.
  • Prepare and maintain an organized Blackboard course site with current instructional materials, assignments, announcements, grades, and other required course content.
  • Provide students with a clear syllabus, course expectations, grading criteria, and timely, constructive feedback on their academic progress.
  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and technology to support adult and non-traditional learners in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments.
  • Maintain regular communication with students, hold appropriate office or consultation hours, and respond promptly to questions and concerns.
  • Monitor attendance and academic performance, identify students who may need additional support, and make appropriate referrals to college resources.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, academically honest, and supportive learning environment consistent with Livingstone College's mission and Christian heritage.
  • Submit syllabi, attendance records, grades, assessment data, and other required course documentation accurately and by established deadlines.
  • Participate in required orientation, professional development, departmental meetings, assessment activities, and other instructional responsibilities.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Education/ Experience

  • What you will need to be successful!
  • Master’s degree in religious studies, Theology, Divinity, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution; doctorate preferred.
  • At least 18 graduate credit hours in Religious Studies or the assigned teaching discipline, as required by institutional credentialing standards.
  • Previous teaching experience in higher education, adult education, or a comparable instructional setting.
  • Experience supporting adult and nontraditional learners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of religious traditions, sacred texts, theology, ethics, and the historical and cultural influence of religion.
  • Strong communication, organizational, instructional, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible teaching schedule, including evening and weekend courses.
  • Experience teaching hybrid or online courses is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Blackboard or a comparable learning management system.
