About the role

The Sports Specialist provides age-appropriate sports instruction, coaching, and mentorship to youth in after-school and day camp programs. They are responsible for organizing physical activity programming, ensuring participant safety, and motivating students to stay active.

SUMMARY

New York Edge is seeking passionate and enthusiastic people to fill the role of Sports Specialist. In this role, you will be critical in providing targeted, skill- and age-appropriate instruction, coaching, and mentorship to youth in New York Edge’s after-school day camp programs. Sports Specialists organize and lead physical activity programming at their site, ensuring the safety of all program participants.

WORK SCHEDULE • 9-15 hours per week. • Monday through Friday -- 2

30 pm - 5:30 pm

Essential job functions

Motivate students to be active daily.

Ensure daily activity lesson plans and projects are structured, age-appropriate, and have clear learning goals based on the provided sports and physical activity guide.

Maintain communication with the Program Director and Center for Sports and Wellness regarding the calendar of programs, leagues, tournaments, and special events.

Motivate and encourage students to participate in organization-wide sports activities.

Establish and enforce safety rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

Instruct participants on the activities' principles, techniques, and safety procedures and show how to use materials and equipment properly.

Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.

Prepare facilities for group activities.

Evaluate activities to determine if they are producing the desired results.

Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.

Promote and ensure the progressive development of student skills and character development in all youth.

Most New York Edge Sports Specialists are expected to provide support during Academic hours.

Adapt each activity to ensure safe participation in the space provided.

Required skills

Must be knowledgeable and skilled in Sports and have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth.

Prior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred

Must be able to follow a curriculum

Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual!

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.

May be required to walk up and down stairs.

May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.

Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required; some college preferred
  • A minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.
  • A minimum of one year of teaching experience is required.
  • Must have passion for New York Edge's mission and demonstrated interest in education and youth development.
  • Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred.

The Sports Specialist will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.

At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.

Requirements
