About the role

The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership and instruction for students in swim classes while maintaining a supportive and positive atmosphere. Responsibilities include preparing lesson plans, maintaining attendance records, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

Essential functions

1.

Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.

2.

Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.

3.

Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.

4.

Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).

5.

Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

6.

Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.

Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

7.

Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.

Reports damaged equipment.

8.

Reports to duty 10 minutes before shift and secures a substitute if necessary and with proper notification.

9.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 16 years old
  • Required Certifications: YMCA approved basic life saving to include CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen administration
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent
  • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  • Must demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards

Work environment & physical demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor aquatic environment.

Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.

Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.

Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.

Visual acuity is required to see and observe all sections of assigned zone or area of responsibility. Must be able to see and recognize aquatic distress above and below the water surface.

Ability to respond properly to medical emergency is necessary.

Ability to sit and stand for long periods at a time are required, as well as the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.

Job requires high levels of alertness and concentration.

Requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and hold YMCA-approved certifications in basic life saving, CPR, AED, First Aid, and swim instruction. Physical readiness to perform rescue duties and the ability to instruct stroke techniques in an aquatic environment are required.
