Job Description

Department: Modern Languages Subject Area: CHINESE LANGUAGE Description of Position: The Department of Modern Languages is seeking a team-oriented Chinese language instructor committed to serving students and working collaboratively with colleagues. The position involves the planning, teaching, and grading of Chinese courses. Currently available are two sections: Chinese 1115 (Beginner’s Chinese 1) and Chinese 2221 (Mandarin Conversation 1) for the fall 2026 semester. Candidates are expected to have substantial experience in the following the areas: Teaching Chinese language skills and grammar to non-native speakers. Working with educational technologies used in language instruction and learning. Working closely and cooperatively with other instructors in an instructional environment. Engaging students while effectively managing classroom conduct. General

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain currency and strive for excellence in instructional practices and approaches. Ensure effective use of available class and lab time and maintain appropriate office hours. Attend all department meetings and collaborate with colleagues in the development and revision of course materials and participate actively in program design and review. Provide online or in-person advising to students and prospective students. Required Qualifications: A minimum of a Master’s degree in Chinese language, linguistics, education, or related field in which the candidate has specialized in the teaching of a foreign or second language. A minimum of two-year experience teaching Chinese at the college or university level. Applicants should have knowledge and the ability to teach Chinese grammar, composition and oral communication skills from beginners to advanced levels. The ability to work as part of a team and to participate as appropriate in departmental and college administrative tasks. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Chinese. Ability to work with educational technologies used in language instruction and learning and curriculum development: word processing, PowerPoint, spreadsheet, applications used with mobile devices, online platform, etc. Knowledge and experience working with learning management systems: Brightspace, Moodle, etc. Knowledge and Interest in indigenizing and decolonizing the curriculum and incorporating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in one’s teaching practices Knowledge of Chinese beginner and advanced-level textbooks used in B.C. Knowledge of common difficulties experienced by beginner and advanced learners studying Chinese. Other requirement: Candidates must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. Length of appointment, if temporary: Recruiting for the fall 2026, for a term appointment. Start Date: August 4th, 2026. Salary placement on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
