About the role

The Assistant Director manages student-athlete insurance claims, coordinates health education initiatives, and ensures compliance with NCAA health standards. They also track medical billing, analyze insurance coverage, and provide cost-saving reports to leadership.

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Athletic Insurance & Health Coordinator supports the administration of student-athlete insurance claims and health education initiatives within the Athletics Department. This position serves as a primary point of contact for insurance-related matters and assists in maintaining compliance with departmental and NCAA health and wellness standards.

This position is not eligible for a hybrid/remote work schedule.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives.

Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision-making.

This level is typically focused on self-development.

Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions

Serve as liaison between the athletic insurance office, student-athletes, parents, certified athletic trainers, team physician offices, insurance providers, and risk management.

Collect and interpret injury documentation for accurate and timely insurance claim submission.

Analyze student-athlete primary insurance coverage to determine the appropriate course of action following an injury or accident.

Track medical bills from submission through payment to ensure efficient processing.

Identify cost-saving measures including in-network appointments, provider contracting, and payment efficiencies.

Maintain current records and provide monthly cost savings analysis to senior leadership.

Manage prescription charges through the departmental pharmacy charge account.

Coordinate with athletic training staff to maintain current information on outside referrals.

Develop and present annual insurance policy education sessions for each student-athlete team.

Assist with the management and renewal of athletic department staff CPR certifications, ATC Board of Medicine licenses, and continuing education credits.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret Explanations of Benefits (EOBs) and insurance-related documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Health Sciences, or a related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in collegiate athletics.
  • Working knowledge of insurance networks, coverage packages, and medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and injury tracking software (e.g., Smartbase, Teamworks).
