The instructor is responsible for leading safe, energizing, and educational group exercise classes while building positive relationships with members. They must also maintain equipment, monitor participant technique, and support members in achieving their health and wellness goals.
The following are the minimum qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Please note that the minimum qualifications may vary based upon the need and can be modified at the discretion of management. Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED. National Group Exercise certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA) in group fitness instruction highly recommended. At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes required. Certification in areas of expertise. Continuing educations/renewals of certifications kept up to date and submitted to the supervisor on or before certifications expire. Skills/Abilities: Ability to positively motivate members/children/participants in fitness activities. Excellent verbal communication skills. Strong customer and results orientation. Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures. Ability to be an effective member of the Group Exercise team. Ability to teach one or more of the following formats: AquaFit, Senior Fit Classes, Zumba, Dance Classes for Adults Leadership Competencies: Mission Advancement: Accepts and demonstrates the Y’s values. Demonstrates a desire to serve others and fulfill community needs. Recruits volunteers and builds effective, supportive working relationships with them.

Ability to physically move around for extended periods while observing/ teaching class/instructing. Ability to see and hear distress signals of participants/members. Frequently required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to push, lift, pull and/or move up to 40 lbs.
