About the role

The Remote Patient Education Nurse provides individualized education and support to oncology patients regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and symptom management. The role also involves leading the development and standardization of patient education programs and serving as a subject matter expert in oncology patient engagement.

Overview

The Remote Patient Education Nurse provides individualized education and support to patients and caregivers regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, symptom management, and supportive care services.

This role ensures patients receive accurate, evidence-based information that promotes understanding, treatment adherence, and self-management.

The nurse maintains current knowledge of emerging therapies, medications, and oncology best practices to deliver up-to-date patient education.

This position is primarily remote, with onsite attendance required as needed for meetings, training, and operational needs.

This is a part-time 24-hour weekly position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive virtual education and counseling to patients and caregivers regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, medications, and supportive care therapies.
  • Assess patient and caregiver learning needs, health literacy, readiness to learn, and barriers to understanding.
  • Develop individualized education plans to support treatment adherence and self-management.
  • Educate patients and families regarding chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, supportive care medications, oral oncology agents, and emerging treatment options.
  • Remain current on newly approved oncology medications, treatment protocols, and clinical evidence to ensure patient education reflects the most up-to-date standards of care.
  • Translate complex medical information into patient-friendly language that promotes understanding and engagement.
  • Provide education regarding medication administration, side effect management, symptom monitoring, and when to contact the care team.
  • Develop and maintain patient education materials, written resources, digital content, and educational tools that align with current clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with providers, pharmacy, nursing, navigation, research, and supportive care teams to ensure consistent patient education across the continuum of care.
  • Reinforce treatment expectations, follow-up schedules, and care plan instructions to promote patient preparedness and adherence.
  • Educate patients and caregivers regarding available community resources, support services, financial assistance programs, and survivorship resources.
  • Document educational encounters, patient understanding, identified learning barriers, and follow-up needs in the medical record.
  • Evaluate patient comprehension using teach-back and other evidence-based educational methods.
  • Serve as a resource for patients and families regarding treatment-related questions and concerns.
  • Participate in the development, review, and continuous improvement of patient education programs and materials.
  • Support initiatives that improve patient engagement, satisfaction, self-management, and overall treatment experience.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all regulatory, privacy, and organizational requirements.
  • Maintain professional competency through continuing education and ongoing review of emerging oncology therapies and standards of care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Senior-Level Responsibilities Lead development and standardization of patient education programs across the organization.
  • Identify educational gaps and opportunities to improve patient understanding and treatment preparedness.
  • Monitor emerging oncology therapies and coordinate updates to patient education resources as new medications and treatments become available.
  • Evaluate patient education outcomes through quality metrics, patient feedback, and engagement measures.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in oncology patient education, health literacy, and patient engagement strategies.
  • Mentor team members involved in patient education initiatives and contribute to organizational patient experience goals.
  • Remote Work Expectations This position is eligible for a remote work arrangement based on operational needs and demonstrated ability to independently manage workload, priorities, and productivity expectations.
  • The incumbent must maintain consistent communication and availability during scheduled work hours and meet established performance, documentation, and service standards.
  • Periodic onsite attendance may be required for meetings, training, departmental initiatives, patient education program development, quality improvement activities, or other business needs as determined by leadership.
  • Employees in this role are expected to report onsite when requested by management and to participate in in-person activities necessary to support organizational goals and patient care initiatives.
  • Continued remote work eligibility is contingent upon maintaining satisfactory job performance, productivity, communication, and adherence to organizational policies.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
  • Current RN license and registration with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Must maintain continuing education requirements.
  • Five years of nursing experience, including at least one year in specialty care preferred.
  • Specialty certification preferred.
  • Working Conditions Work is performed in a clinical environment with possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to healthcare settings.
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods, manual dexterity, and occasional lifting up to 40 lbs.
  • Specialty Specific Responsibilities Transplant RN Provides nursing care from initial patient contact through high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue to follow-up care post stem cell rescue.
  • Manages symptoms/toxicities related to high-dose therapy and rehabilitation post-rescue in collaboration with transplant physician/supervisor.
  • Reports data to transplant registries and incorporates network recommendations into practice.
  • Assists in community education regarding stem cell transplantation.
  • Infusion RN Programs portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and instructs patients/caregivers on pump use at home.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use, maintenance, cleaning, and documentation.
  • Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy provider card preferred.
  • Radiation Oncology RN Provides nursing care specific to radiation oncology patients.
  • Gynecological Oncology RN Provides nursing care specific to gynecological oncology patients.
  • Pay Scale: The general pay scale for this position at BRCC is $30.26-$46.55.
  • The actual hiring rate is dependent on many factors, including but not limited to prior work experience, education, job/position responsibilities, location, work performance, etc.

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited nursing program with a current RN license and BLS certification. A minimum of five years of nursing experience is required, with at least one year in specialty care preferred.
