About the role

The teacher is responsible for conducting developmental assessments, creating individual educational plans, and managing daily classroom activities. They must also supervise teacher assistants, maintain student records, and provide personal care support to students.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education or equivalent, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university.
  • Eligible for Permanent certification or eligible for or in the process of obtaining Professional certification in New York State as Special Education Teacher.
  • Two years teaching experience with pre-school and/or school-aged children with physical and/or developmental disabilities preferred.

Essential responsibilities

  • Conduct a developmental assessment for each student.
  • Develop individual goals and objectives for each student based on developmental assessment.
  • Develop goals and objectives for total curriculum.
  • Participate in the IEP Direct draft and update process.
  • Develop lesson plans.
  • Conduct daily classroom activities.
  • Establish regular parent conferences and provide continued support for parents.
  • Request, utilize and maintain appropriate educational materials and equipment.
  • Communicate with staff and other professionals in an effort to provide a total educational program for each student.
  • Write and maintain complete reports on each student that include individual educational plans, progress reports, developmental scales, and any other reports needed.
  • Become familiar with and implement assistive technology in the classroom.
  • Participate in staff and program development as needed.
  • Supervise teacher assistants.
  • Maintain attendance records of all students within the classroom.
  • Assist and train students in personal care needs, including but not limited to: feeding, toileting, dressing and washing.
  • Assist with loading and unloading students on and off busses.

The School for Achievement follows Kingston School District calendar

Requirements

Candidates must hold at least a Bachelor's degree in Special Education and be eligible for New York State certification. Two years of teaching experience with children who have physical or developmental disabilities is preferred.
