About the role

The ESOL Teacher plans and delivers weekly in-person English lessons for adult learners at the Foundations level. They are also responsible for tracking student attendance, conducting assessments, and supporting program events.

Annually, POTS serves more than 35,000 people, including 12,000 children. Our services are organized around three programmatic pillars: a Dignity and Wellness Program provides shower, mail, haircut and medical and dental services; a Food Security Program offers hot meals and groceries; and a Long-Term Stability Program provides guidance on applications for public benefits and mentoring for long-term personal growth.

About the Position

The Part-Time ESOL Teacher delivers in-person English instruction for POTS' English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, teaching the Foundations of English (Level 0) class. Working under the supervision of the Associate Director, Long-Term Stability Services, and in coordination with the ESOL Coordinator, the ESOL Teacher plans and delivers weekly lessons in basic literacy and beginning English skills, tracks student attendance and progress, and supports assessments and program events. The role includes two weekday evening classes and one Saturday class each week.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and deliver weekly in-person lessons for the Foundations of English (Level 0) class, covering basic literacy, letter and sound recognition, and everyday vocabulary.

Create a patient, welcoming classroom environment for beginning-level adult learners.

Track student attendance and progress, and report to the ESOL Coordinator.

Assist with CASAS pre- and post-testing to measure student language acquisition.

Prepare and organize classroom materials and lesson plans.

Communicate regularly with the Associate Director, Long-Term Stability Services, and the ESOL Coordinator on student needs and classroom updates.

Support graduation ceremonies and other ESOL program events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching English to adult beginning-level learners preferred; identification with POTS’s mission and values
  • TESOL/ESOL certification preferred, not required
  • Familiarity with beginning literacy instruction, such as phonics and letter/sound recognition, a plus
  • Reliable and punctual; able to commit to two weekday evening classes and one Saturday class each week
  • Warm, patient, and professional in interactions with participants, staff, and community members
  • Experience working with immigrant or low-income communities preferred
  • Spanish language proficiency a plus, not required

Requirements

The ideal candidate has experience teaching adult beginning-level learners and possesses strong organizational and interpersonal skills. While not required, TESOL/ESOL certification and Spanish language proficiency are considered beneficial assets.
