The Behavioral Specialist provides crisis intervention and classroom support to students with developmental disabilities to ensure safety and program integrity. They assist in the implementation of behavior support plans and train other staff on effective teaching methods.

  • K-5 with the following primary diagnoses: autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbances, learning disabilities and speech/language impairments. Located in Highland, New York, we serve up to 40 students across five classrooms, supporting youth who require a higher level of care than may be provided in their local schools. The Behavior Specialist (Crisis Support) role will provide crisis intervention and other assistance as needed to maintain safety and program integrity. The Behavior Specialists will provide support to students who need a higher level of care to participate in instruction as needed, and assist in implementation of skill acquisition and behavior support plans as directed. Under the direction of the classroom teacher, they will assist in training other staff in implementation. The Behavior Specialists (Crisis Support) will administer and implement behavior improvement programs recommended by administration and appraise the effectiveness of the program in meeting the students’ needs. In addition, they will advise staff on possible causes of student’s behavior and suggest methods of teaching alternative skills or modifying the environment. Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, human services or related field preferred. EXPERIENCE: At least one year’s experience with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, inhalants or other chemical or controlled substances. Significant, prolonged and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending and lifting of 50 pounds or more. Using standard crisis intervention procedures, must be able to singlehandedly effect the initial restraint of children and adolescents. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens. Devereux has a zero-tolerance policy for abuse and maintains policies and procedures to systematically reduce the risk of abuse to occur in our organization.
