About the role

The instructor is responsible for designing and leading safe, effective Pilates mat classes while maintaining equipment and ensuring a clean exercise environment. They must also engage with members, track attendance, and support YMCA special events and campaigns.

Overview Under the general direction of the Membership/Wellness Director and consistent with the mission and the policies and procedures set forth by the YMCA of Catawba Valley, the Group Exercise Class Instructor is responsible for teaching classes in accordance with YMCA standards. As a member of the Group Exercise staff, the instructor’s main responsibility is to serve YMCA members and prospective members and exemplify the highest standards of the YMCA. **Morning and evening availability needed This job announcement is not intended to be inclusive of all functions, responsibilities and qualifications associated with the position, however, representative of the essential job functions and typical criteria considered necessary to successfully perform the position.

Responsibilities

Design and prepare class routines that meet all the necessary components and safety guidelines in accordance with current accepted practices of exercise physiology. Attend staff meetings. Complete all required education and training. All certifications must be kept current, copy provided to the Membership/Wellness Director, and uploaded to appropriate program data system(s). Record class attendance in Group Ex Pro immediately following class. Follow procedure for securing a substitute by using Group Ex Pro and as necessarymaking contacts until substitute is secured. Report to the Membership/Wellness Director is no substitute is available. Start and end classes on time and ensure a safe and seamless transition. Ensure an acceptable level of class attendance through member engagement, support and encouragement. Maintain equipment and keep group exercise area neat and clean. Ensure safety and report equipment in need of repair. Enforce all group exercise class guidelines and policies reporting any non-compliance to the Membership/Wellness Director. Participate in Branch Annual Giving Campaign. Participate in and support special events, programs, and member promotions. Communicate to members and perspective members any information regarding special programs, events, and promotions. Understand and communicate branch emergency procedures to members as necessary. Support the mission, vision and direction of the YMCA of Catawba Valley. Member engagement that provides a high level of encouragement and support. Any other duties assigned by the Membership/Wellness Director or Director on Duty. Using safe and proper intensity progression and regression for class level. Monitoring participants and educating as well as instructing. Communicating the YMCA’s values and mission. Adhering to YMCA policy and procedure to include but not limited to “Dress Code”,“Computer Usage”, and “Code of Conduct”. All YMCA staff are responsible for creating a safe, inclusive environment. This includes following all YMCA policies and procedures related to abuse prevention, reporting concerns or incidents immediately, and maintaining appropriate boundaries with youth and members.

Qualifications

Personal commitment to YMCA cause and mission. YMCA Instructor certification, or other nationally, recognized aerobic/fitness organization. Current certification in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Oxygen. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to relate and engage positively with staff and members. Proven team player.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a YMCA or nationally recognized fitness instructor certification along with current CPR, First Aid, AED, and Oxygen certifications. Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to the YMCA mission are required.
