About the role

The Youth Sports Instructor provides direct supervision and instruction for sports classes, ensuring participants learn proper techniques in a fun and encouraging environment. They are also responsible for equipment maintenance, setup, and fostering positive relationships with children and their families.

Turn your love of sports into an opportunity to make a difference! The YMCA of the Roses is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic Youth Sports Instructor to join our team at the Shrewsbury YMCA. This part-time position is perfect for someone who enjoys working with children, teaching the fundamentals of sports, and creating a fun, encouraging environment where every young athlete can learn, grow, and build confidence.

Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a sports program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Instruct sports classes/events of up to approximately 10-30 youth With the program agenda provided by the Sports Director, instruct participants in the proper techniques of the major sports offered during different times of the year Promote character counts values (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility) Ensure all equipment is used properly, cleaned, and returned to the appropriate locations Set-up and clean-up before and after class each day May assist in events such as Kids Night Out, Healthy Kids Day, races, etc. LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES: Engaging Community Developing Others Functional Expertise

Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old with a High School diploma/GED Minimum of 1 year working with youth or in a leadership position preferred Knowledge in teaching/instructing the fundamentals of one or more of these sports: basketball, soccer, t-ball/baseball, flag football, volleyball, and floor hockey Must have or obtain CPR and AED certification Must have or obtain clearances for working with youth WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical Requirements Light – exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Body Position and Movement (Seldom-1-10%, Occasionally-10-30%, Frequently 30-60%, Continuously 60-100% of the time) o Stationary Position – Seldom o Reaching - Occasionally o Move/Traverse – Frequently o Pulling/Pushing - Occasionally o Position self to move about with agility (upright or lowered to the floor) - Occasionally o Lifting – Frequently o Ascend/Descend - Occasionally Visual Requirements Detect and visually follow moving objects Auditory (Hearing) Requirements Ability to hear voices, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds to communicate, and respond to alarms/emergencies Hazardous Conditions/Materials Exposure Possible frequent exposure to outdoor elements Obtain Criminal background check, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI fingerprint clearance.

Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years old with a High School diploma or GED and have at least one year of experience working with youth. Additionally, applicants must obtain or hold CPR and AED certifications and pass required criminal background and child abuse clearances.
