About the role

The tutor is responsible for planning and delivering high-dosage math instruction to small groups of middle school students during the school day. They must also monitor student academic progress, maintain accurate records, and collaborate with program management to ensure growth targets are met.

Who We Are

CAMP partners with Bessemer City Schools to deliver high-dosage tutoring and academic support to middle school students in Bessemer Middle School. As part of this partnership, CAMP recruits, hires, and deploys in-school tutors to work with students in Math during the school day.

Job Description

This is a professional instructional position responsible for the delivery of high-dosage, in-school tutoring in Math. Tutors will function as classroom instructors — planning lessons, tracking student growth, and adjusting instruction based on data — rather than informal helpers. Tutors will lead sessions during the school day, three times per week for 60 minutes, in small groups of 5–8 students.

This is a results-driven role. Tutors are expected to actively monitor each student's academic progress throughout the year, meet regularly with the CAMP Program Manager to review outcomes, and adjust instruction to keep students on track toward growth goals.

The Tutor's responsibilities include but are not limited to

Plan and deliver high-dosage tutoring sessions in Math, three times per week (60 minutes each), to assigned student groups of 5–8, with the same instructional rigor and accountability expected of a classroom teacher Use the curriculum lesson plans provided to instruct and support tutored students during each session Continuously monitor and document individual student progress across the tutoring cycle, flagging students who are falling behind growth targets and adjusting instruction accordingly Attend regular check-ins with the CAMP Site Coordinator and/or Program Manager (at minimum monthly, more frequently as needed) to review student progress data and delivery metrics Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of session delivery, student attendance, and progress in VELA, and submit on a timely basis to the CAMP Program Manager Own student outcome goals for assigned groups, including 80% of enrolled students attending 80%+ of scheduled sessions and measurable academic growth from start to end of year Administer or support administration of mid-year and end-of-year student surveys as directed Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of each session and remain for its full duration, providing instruction and support throughout Collaborate with fellow tutors, on-site leads, and CAMP personnel on program implementation and logistics Perform related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Pursuing or completed Bachelor’s degree Bachelor's degree or higher Experience working with middle or high school students Strong ability to communicate with students and peers verbally and in writing Comfort working with student data and platforms such as IXL, A+ College Ready Standards, and ACAP Comfortable being held to measurable student growth and attendance targets, and communicating progress in regular check-ins with program leadership

90-Day Introductory/Probationary Period

All newly hired CAMP employees will complete a 90-day introductory probationary period. During this period, the employee’s performance, attendance, reliability, professionalism, ability to collaborate, adherence to CAMP policies and procedures, and overall alignment with the expectations of the position will be evaluated. A formal evaluation will be conducted during or at the conclusion of the 90-day period to determine continued employment.

Requirements

Candidates must possess or be pursuing a bachelor's degree and have experience working with middle or high school students. Strong communication skills and comfort with data-driven instruction and student growth targets are required.
