About the role

The instructor is responsible for teaching swimming lessons according to national guidelines and ensuring the safety of all participants. They must also manage equipment setup, maintain pool cleanliness, and track student attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all posted rules and any other rules that are required to ensure the safety of all participants.
  • Teach swim lessons to participants at appropriate age levels, per national guidelines of course levels and ratios.
  • Plan lessons for classes, be well prepared for lesson.
  • Responsible for set up and tear down of lessons (includes all utilized equipment).
  • Take attendance at all classes.
  • Responsible for updating all areas and certifications through the YMCA training certification program as needed for position.
  • Responsible to assist in the cleanliness of the pool and reporting any maintenance needs.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • National CPR, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen and YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification.
  • Not certified?
  • No problem — we provide free training and certification!
  • Must pass skills test that includes: Tread water for two minutes.
  • Demonstrate Stage 5 proficiency in at least four of the following six strokes by swimming 25 yards of each: Front Crawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Butterfly, Elementary Backstroke, and Backstroke.
  • Must be able to relate and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.

Requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and possess or be willing to obtain YMCA Swim Instructor, CPR, and First Aid certifications. A skills test demonstrating proficiency in multiple swimming strokes is required.
