The assistant coach supports the head coach in organizing practices, developing game strategies, and managing player development. They are also responsible for supervising student-athletes during events and ensuring compliance with school and district policies.
The Assistant Girls’ Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in leading, organizing, and developing the girls’ basketball program. This position is responsible for assisting with player development, practice planning, game strategy, supervision of athletes, and maintaining compliance with school, district, and VHSL policies. The Assistant Coach serves as a role model for student-athletes by promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, academic achievement, and personal growth.
Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting effective practices and training sessions. Teach basketball fundamentals, position skills, team strategies, and game rules. Support the Head Coach in developing game plans, scouting opponents, and managing in-game adjustments. Provide constructive feedback to athletes on performance and growth. Encourage student-athletes’ academic success and monitor VHSL eligibility requirements. Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and school-related events. Promote safe training techniques and proper uses of equipment. Serve as mentor and positive role model for student athletes on and off the court. Assist in maintaining and inventorying uniforms, equipment, and facilities. Support communication with athletes, parents, and school staff regarding schedules, expectations, and team matters. Uphold program rules, discipline standards, and expectations set by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and school administration.
Previous coaching and/or playing experience in basketball (preferred). Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and strategies. Ability to work effectively with student-athletes, parents, and staff. Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills. CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain). Completion of state or VHSL-required coaching education/training. Background check and clearance per school division’s policy.
Practices and games occur after school, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Frequent travel for away games and tournaments. Work performed indoors (gymnasium) with some lifting and physical activity required.
