The educator provides academic support and supervision to students in the ALTOSS program to reduce suspension recidivism. They are responsible for managing classroom behaviors, facilitating group activities, and coordinating with school-based teachers to administer assignments.

The ALTOSS Educator will provide educational support and supervision to students attending the Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension Program (ALTOSS) from the Martin County School District. You will be responsible for creating and administering educational activities, to provide focus and interventions to reduce the suspension recidivism rate in Martin County, to assist with day-to-day functions of the ALTOSS program, and to support each component, as needed.

Primary duties and job responsibilities

Provides educational support and assistance to all program students. To assist with gathering school assigned work via communicating with school-based teachers and administering assignments as needed. Assesses students’ academic abilities and assigns academic work, focusing on core school subjects, but particularly reading, language arts, math, and study skills. Provides a daily supportive role to the Program Manager and ALTOSS Therapist and takes on respective responsibilities upon their absences. Manages classroom behaviors and implements positive behavioral incentives. Provides individual support and guidance as needed. Assists with planning and facilitating group activities and evidence informed curriculum focusing on teamwork, conflict resolution, peer pressure, self-respect, anger management, etc., as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and competencies

Excellent knowledge of core academic subjects; Professional customer service skills; Excellent abilities and skills when working with youth; Work requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions generally acquired through a high school education; Knowledge of and compliance with state and federal statutes, rules and policies that affect children; Experience in delivery of high-quality, client-centered care; Able to document and navigate electronic health record and various education-based tools and websites independently and accurately; Ability to maintain strict client confidentiality; Judgment and decision making, and complex problem solving; Ability to clearly articulate messages to a variety of audiences and formats; Work independently and have good organizational skills; Ability to demonstrate both good communication and listening skills.

Education and experience required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, or related field from an accredited university or college.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the Education field, or related experience.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field and possess at least three years of experience in the education sector. Proficiency in core academic subjects and the ability to pass criminal background checks are mandatory.
