About the role

The coach will instruct students in speech and debate strategies while fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-discipline. They are responsible for designing practice plans, monitoring student progress, and maintaining program policies.

Supervisor: Student Athletics Director

SUMMARY

Coach and instruct students in the fundamental skills, strategy, and training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success and formulate moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Design tactics and strategies for the team. Foster cooperation and positive teamwork, exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship, and provide mentorship for students.

Duties: And responsibilities:

  • The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only.
  • Study students’ skills and abilities to maximize their individual and team performance. Develop and implement ideas to optimize student performance. Devise, direct, and execute tactical strategies. [Daily, 30%]
  • Create and sustain individual and team practice plans. [Daily, 25%]
  • Document student attendance, behavior, and academic status. [Daily, 15%]
  • Adhere to, enforce, and implement district, school, and activity program policies. [Daily, 15%]
  • Establish and maintain direction and expectations for all program participants. [Daily, 5%]
  • Communicate student status with student and their parent(s)/guardian(s). Provide mentorship for students. [Weekly, 5%]
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%]

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as a participant and/or advisor in speech and debate.
  • Advanced communication skills.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.

  • All certifications, licenses, and registrations must be valid and unexpired.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and have experience as a participant or advisor in speech and debate. A criminal background check and fingerprinting are required for employment.
