About the role

The Head Preschool Teacher develops and implements age-appropriate curriculum while maintaining a safe, nurturing, and structured classroom environment. They also manage daily activities, communicate student progress to parents, and supervise student assistants.

Augustana University invites applications for the position of Head Preschool Teacher in the Campus Learning Center. This is a full-time, 12-month position with a standard schedule of 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Head Preschool Teacher plays a key role in creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for children ages 3–5. This position works in partnership with families and staff to support each child’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development, fostering independence, belonging, and a love of learning.

  • The duties, competencies, and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum and lesson plans that support core Kindergarten readiness academics.
  • Create and maintain a positive, structured classroom environment that encourages learning, creativity, and exploration
  • Plan and manage daily schedules and activities that promote children’s wellbeing and developmental progress
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress, classroom activities, and Center updates
  • Prepare and present child progress evaluations and participate in parent/teacher conferences
  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to attendance, nutrition, health, and student needs
  • Supervise and mentor student assistants, including scheduling support and contributing to performance feedback
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary classroom environment through daily organization and maintenance practices
  • Support family engagement opportunities such as open houses and community events
  • Comply with all Campus Learning Center policies, University procedures, and state childcare regulations

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in early childhood development or an elementary education environment
  • Experience in a childcare or related setting and/or an associate’s degree in early childhood development

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field

Working Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Regular interaction with children, families, and staff in a childcare setting
  • Ability to work in a busy, active, and occasionally noisy environment
  • Occassional heavy lifting

Interacting with students, faculty and leadership from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, along with a deep appreciation and respect for academic principles and culture, must be a top value of the candidate.
