Practice for this role

About the role

Tutors will provide high-impact, in-person academic support in ELA, Reading, Writing, and Phonics to students in grades 1-8. They are responsible for implementing lesson plans, tracking student progress, and collaborating with school staff to ensure academic goals are met.

About the Role

HeyTutor is seeking dedicated and dependable ELA & Reading Tutors to provide high-impact, in-person academic support to students in grades 1–8. Tutors will work approximately 20 hours per week, providing individualized and small-group instruction focused on ELA, Reading, Writing, Phonics, and literacy intervention. Tutors may also assist students with homework and assignment completion to reinforce classroom learning and help students strengthen their overall academic skills. This is an especially valuable opportunity for aspiring educators and individuals interested in pursuing a career in teaching. Tutors selected for the program will receive Orton-Gillingham training provided by the District, allowing them to gain hands-on experience with a structured, evidence-based approach to literacy instruction. Because consistency is critical to student progress, we are specifically looking for tutors who can commit to the entire duration of the program. Students will build relationships with their tutors and rely on consistent instructional support throughout the program, making reliability and long-term commitment essential for this role. What You'll Do As a TAS Tutor, you will: Provide in-person, high-dosage tutoring to students in grades 1–8. Tutor students primarily in ELA and Reading, including Reading, Writing, Phonics, and literacy intervention. Provide individualized and/or small-group instruction based on student academic needs. Support students who are experiencing learning gaps or require additional academic intervention. Assist students with homework and assignment completion when needed to reinforce classroom learning. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with student needs, District curriculum, and applicable intervention goals. Complete District-provided Orton-Gillingham training/certification before beginning literacy intervention with students. Implement the District's Orton-Gillingham curriculum and instructional strategies with students. Utilize District-approved curriculum, intervention plans, and instructional resources. Work with student groups developed using i-Ready baseline scores and recommendations from teachers, administrators, and counselors. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and other school personnel to ensure tutoring services align with classroom instruction and student academic goals. Maintain accurate student enrollment, attendance logs, sign-in/out sheets, and other required ELOP documentation. Complete required data entry and follow all District documentation and student confidentiality requirements. Support student recruitment and retention efforts through parent outreach and communication. Greet students and families and help direct parent questions to the appropriate school or program staff. Communicate with families regarding schedules, pick-up procedures, and applicable program policies. Notify the ELOP Site Lead and/or ELOP Lead of urgent concerns or student issues requiring additional support. Who We're Looking For We're looking for individuals who are: Passionate about helping students develop stronger reading and literacy skills. Interested in education, teaching, literacy, child development, or a related field. Excited to receive Orton-Gillingham training and gain experience with structured literacy intervention. Comfortable tutoring students across grades 1–8. Confident supporting students in ELA, Reading, Writing, and Phonics. Patient and able to work effectively with students who may be experiencing academic or learning gaps. Comfortable working individually with students and leading small-group instruction. Professional when communicating with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and school staff. Organized and able to maintain accurate attendance and program documentation. Reliable, punctual, and able to work approximately 20 hours per week. Able and willing to commit to the entire duration of the tutoring program. Future Educators Are Strongly Encouraged to Apply! If you're currently studying to become a teacher or are considering a future career in education, this role is an excellent opportunity to build your instructional experience. Education majors, aspiring teachers, substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, instructional aides, recent graduates, and others pursuing careers in education are strongly encouraged to apply. Tutors will receive Orton-Gillingham training provided by the District, giving you valuable exposure to a widely recognized structured literacy approach while gaining real-world experience working directly with students in grades 1–8. Why Join This Program? This position offers more than traditional part-time tutoring. You'll have the opportunity to: Gain hands-on experience working with students across multiple grade levels. Receive Orton-Gillingham literacy training. Develop small-group and individualized instructional skills. Gain experience using student academic data to guide intervention. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and other education professionals. Build valuable experience for a future career in teaching or education. Make a meaningful impact on students who need additional academic support. If you're looking for a part-time, 20-hour-per-week opportunity where you can build your education experience while helping students strengthen their ELA and reading skills, we encourage you to apply!
