Position Summary

The Exceptional Children (EC) 1:1 Assistant provides individualized instructional, accessibility, mobility, and school-participation support to a student with a disability as determined by the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the student can safely access instruction, participate in the general education curriculum and school environment, and engage as independently as possible throughout the school day. This position is an educational support position and is not designated as a nursing or medical support position. Essential Responsibilities The EC 1:1 Assistant will: Provide individualized support in accordance with the student’s IEP, accommodations, modifications, and other educational plans. Support the student’s access to and participation in the general education curriculum and classroom environment. Assist the student with classroom routines, instructional activities, organization, use of materials, and other tasks necessary for participation in instruction. Reinforce instructional strategies and skills introduced by the student’s teachers and related-service providers. Support the student in developing independence and completing tasks with the least amount of adult assistance necessary. Assist with mobility and safe movement throughout the school environment, including classrooms, hallways, common areas, arrival and dismissal, and other transitions during the school day. Provide appropriate assistance during transitions between instructional settings, related services, meals, recess, transportation, and other school activities. Assist with routine, non-medical bathroom and personal-care needs as necessary, including support with clothing, transfers or positioning within the scope of training, hygiene routines, and handwashing. Maintain the student’s privacy, dignity, and confidentiality when providing personal assistance. Follow appropriate infection-control and universal-precaution procedures. Implement behavior, communication, sensory, or accessibility supports identified by the IEP team and instructional staff. Observe and communicate information regarding the student’s participation, independence, mobility, academic engagement, and response to supports to the supervising teacher and other appropriate members of the educational team. Participate in student-specific training provided by EC staff, related-service providers, school personnel, or other qualified professionals as appropriate. Collaborate with teachers, EC staff, related-service providers, administrators, and other members of the student’s educational team. Support the student during school-sponsored activities and other portions of the school day identified in the student’s IEP. Perform other student-support duties consistent with the purpose and scope of the position.

Requirements

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or relevant college coursework preferred. Experience working with children or adolescents, particularly students with disabilities, preferred. Ability to follow an IEP and directions provided by teachers, EC staff, related-service providers, and school leaders. Ability and willingness to complete student-specific training related to mobility, transfers, positioning, accessibility, behavior, communication, and safety as applicable. Ability to maintain student confidentiality and protect student privacy and dignity. Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. Dependable attendance and ability to provide consistent support throughout the student’s school day. Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely perform the assigned student-support responsibilities, with reasonable accommodations as appropriate. Pass Criminal Background Check Additional Notes Hours are 7:30 AM - 3:45 PM Monday, Thursday, Friday and 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Tuesday & Wednesday Being able to lift 50 lbs + Being able to stand on your feet 8+ hrs per day Total Benefits EC Assistants are paid based on educational attainment: Bachelor's Degree is $39,000 Associate's Degree or 48 + college credit hours is $37,000 Health Insurance: State Health Plan with plans for individuals, spouses, children, and families Paid Parental Leave: 8 weeks of 100% paid maternity leave and 4 weeks of 100% paid paternity leave Paid Time Off + Sick Leave: 5 days of PTO and 6 sick days every year Retirement: An optional 403b with a generous employer match with immediate vesting
