Course Description

In this course we will examine the interactions among the cognitive, social, emotional, linguistic, and physical development of children from infancy into adolescence. We will pay close attention to children as makers of meaning in the contexts of their development, including family, school, socio-economic class, and culture. Through reading classic and current literature, we will attend to some of the larger questions about development, such as the relationship between nature and nurture, the role of developmental theory, and the tension between the search for developmental universals and the reality of individual differences. The goal is to make developmental theory vibrant and meaningful so that the generalized theoretical child comes to enhance and inform how one understands individual children.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver course content and materials aligned with the program curriculum.
• Grade and evaluate student performance in a timely manner, providing constructive feedback.
• Maintain open communication with students, including scheduled office hours or availability for consultation.
• Submit final grades and required course documentation (e.g., attendance records) by institutional deadlines.
• Collaborate with program faculty on course coordination and attend relevant program meetings, if necessary.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in development, education, or related field, required. Doctorate preferred.
• 5 or more years of experience in the field working directly with children from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds in educational or clinical contexts. Experience in public schools, preferred.
• Critical orientation to issues of access and equity, preferred.
• Strong skills in communication, collaboration, and organization, preferred.
• Experience teaching at the graduate level, preferred.
