The Personal Counselor provides individual psychotherapy, clinical assessment, and triage services to university students. They also design and implement psychoeducational programming and act as a liaison to various university departments.
Personal Counseling attempts to strengthen students' self-esteem, to attain a deepened awareness of their potentials and limitations, and to make use of their intellectual and personal resources, enabling them to reach their full potential as integrated persons consistent with the university's mission. Student Wellness is a holistic presentation of services, resources, and skills to allow students to maximize their student experience, while maintaining balance, growth, and development as individuals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide daily individual ongoing psychotherapy treatment.
Engage in the process of triage, clinical assessment of need, and developing community referral sources as needed.
Offer consultation services to faculty and staff when needed.
Maintain and offer mental health referral sources when the need arises; develop appropriate printed and web-based mental health resource materials for students.
Attend professional development conferences.
Create and run student-based psychoeducational and therapy groups as needed,
Design, implement, and present psycho-educational programming on a broad range of psychological issues including training for student leaders, PTV, SOAR, and other student-related events. 5%
Assist in annual assessment and evaluation of student satisfaction data, Wellness Expo, and any outreach efforts.
Attend professional development conferences.
Attend and participate in division meetings as necessary.
Design, implement, and present psycho-educational programming on a broad range of psychological issues.
Act as liaison to particular university departments, offering knowledge and support regarding psychological and emotional aspects of student experience.
Attend and participate in supervision sessions once per month.
Maintain effective and accurate record-keeping, creating and maintaining charts in a timely manner.
Other duties as assigned.
Education – A college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree.
Employment - Two years to five years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience and ability to give group presentations. Demonstrated excellence in organizational skill set, including attention to detail and thorough record-keeping ability.
Job may require lifting lightweight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average-weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Must currently possess full licensure or be on track to obtain full licensure for practice in the State of Michigan. Preference will be given to candidates with current licensure.
