The Behavior Interventionist designs, implements, and evaluates comprehensive behavior support programs to improve student academic performance. They work collaboratively with school staff to model instructional practices and facilitate behavior intervention plans.

Job Purpose Statement

The job of the Behavior Interventionist is to provide direction at the school level, working to design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program. The Behavior Specialist helps coordinate Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plans that address students’ inappropriate behaviors and provide a means to help the students become more academically successful. The Behavior Interventionist will work directly with the site principal, assistant principals, school psychologist and grade level or content area teachers to collaboratively identify areas of behavior needs for students. In addition, the Behavior Specialist works directly with identified students to adopt behaviors that substantially increase their academic performance. Behavior Intervention Specialist also provides classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies

Essential Job Functions(duties listed are typical but not exclusive)

  • ● Assists teachers and staff by modeling instructional practices and behavior management strategies based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and interventions based on a functional analysis of behavior ●
  • Facilitate team meetings that: design Behavior interventions Plans; effective instruction, social skills instruction, and ethical issues; School-wide Positive Behavioral Support ● Work with individual teachers, groups of teachers and/or the entire staff on issues such as: PBIS, Restorative Practices learning and collaboration issues, and factors that can affect development and implementation of interventions. ● Promote highly specialized positive behavior interventions in which “at risk” students thrive: behavior instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated and provides ample practice. ● Use ongoing assessments to maintain a record of student progress. ● Model good assessment processes that assist students in assessing their own work and behavior. Provide recognition of a variety of student accomplishments and positive behaviors. ● Work cooperatively with administrators to promote positive student behavior by providing professional development that targets research, strategies and modeling of instructional practices to support teachers in their implementation of positive behavior support in their classrooms. ● Continually supervise students to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment where students can thrive. ● Engage in on-going professional development to increase knowledge and skills of positive student behavior support for all students, targeted students and students who represent sub-group populations. ● Engage parents in the “student behavior intervention plan” process and empower parents by providing them with skills and techniques to support the positive behavior development of their child. ● Conduct conflict resolution and peer mediation circle

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications

● Coursework/training in special education, psychology or child development desirable ● Skills to communicate effectively, problem-solve ● Knowledge of curriculum, education code, district policies, problem solving methodology ● Ability maintain and verify completeness of records, meet schedules and deadlines, communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds, communicate in oral and written form ● Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with students, staff and community ● Ability to make decisions quickly regarding the health and safety of students ● Ability to maintain confidentiality of records, discussions and empathize with the needs of students

Desirable

● English Learner and at-risk student support experience. ● Desire to accept feedback and develop professionally. ● Ability to identify and implement needed change. ● Capacity to successfully function in stressful circumstances.
