About the role

The long-term substitute teacher is responsible for delivering educational instruction, creating lesson plans, and maintaining a positive classroom environment. They must also collaborate with other educators and communicate effectively with parents to ensure student mastery of objectives.

Description SUMMARY The Long-Term Substitute is a teacher who fills in for the same absentee teacher (classroom) for 11 or more days. The long-term substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during his/her absence. The Long-Term Substitute’s primary duty is teaching, tutoring, instructing, or lecturing to impart knowledge to students.

Essential duties and responsibilities

The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Long Term Substitute Teacher

  • Under the direction of the principal, collaborates with teachers to create weekly lesson plans.
  • Plans and delivers educational instruction using the most efficient and effective methodology for the students assigned when the regular teacher is unavailable.
  • Provides corrective feedback to students and re-teaches as necessary, to ensure students have mastered the objectives.
  • Implements approved-course curriculum.
  • Implements modifications in a student's educational plan as required.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive classroom environment.
  • Maintains grade books and meets reporting deadlines.
  • Collaborates and clearly communicates with parents/guardians and other educators to assist the students.
  • Completes written reports and assigned administrative tasks related to these functions as needed.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the principal.

    Qualifications

    CATHOLIC FAITH Requires an appreciation and respect for the Catholic Church and its teachings. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the policies of the diocese.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree required. Exceptions must be approved by the Superintendent.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES An understanding of the Catholic faith and the mission of Catholic schools. Ability to use tact, discretion, and confidentiality with student and school information. Ability to effectively interact with a diverse community of learners, educators, and families.

    WORKING CONDITIONS Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time.
    • Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar.
    • Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form.
    • Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15 pounds).
