Description JOB PURPOSE Transition-to-College Instructor will perform college readiness activities and develop end-of-summer deliverables for rising seniors.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Transition-to-College Instructor is responsible for providing targeted college readiness instruction and postsecondary support to Upward Bound participants, with a primary focus on rising seniors. This position will design and deliver engaging, relevant, and standards-based learning experiences that support students’ successful transition from high school to postsecondary education. The instructor will develop and implement instructional materials, addresses diverse learning styles, assess student progress, and advise students on academic, career, and college planning.

In this role, the instructor will ensure that participants complete essential college readiness deliverables, including draft essays and personal statements, career and personality assessments, lists of prospective colleges and universities, scholarship requirement lists, FAFSA IDs for students and parents, brag sheets, draft resumes, college acceptance and scholarship email accounts, and LinkedIn profiles. The instructor will also support participants in achieving key college access outcomes, including improved SAT performance and SAT retake registration, ACT preparation and ACT retake registration, college preparation, understanding options for funding their education, recognizing the benefits of scholarships, and identifying appropriate college match and college fit opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director (or designee).

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university and/or teacher certification.

  • MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Prior teaching experience is strongly preferred.
  • Must be knowledgeable of college readiness activities and milestones and/or experience teaching a student success, AVID/OneGoal, or similiar course is required.
  • Must be organized and possess professional skills.
  • Computer literate.
  • Successful completion of applicable licenses, professional credentials or certifications strongly preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Preference will be given to individuals that have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s targeted population.

  • REQUIRED SKILLS Knowledge of high school curriculum.
  • Ability to maintain classroom management.
  • Computer skills include word processing and database applications.
  • Ability to work independently to organize, set priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with program staff, scholars, and parents.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work-related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers, and presentation materials.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Attendance at conferences and professional development are required.
