Program and Role Summary Wayfinder’s Hatlen Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, founded in 1972 by visionary Phil Hatlen in San Pablo, California, revolutionized education for individuals with visual impairments. As the first transition program of its kind in the United States, it set the gold standard for fostering independence and remains the only program of its kind in the nation. The Hatlen Center is recognized as a pioneer in the field of visual impairment education and continues to stand alone in its unique approach to empowering students. The primary focus of the Program Support Coordinator, is to support students and staff in a residential and educational setting for students who are visually impaired by promoting safety, inclusion, engagement, and well-being. The role involves direct student support, supervision, recreation planning, completion of administration tasks, emergency response, and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment aligned with Wayfinder’s mission and values.

  • Responsibilities: Supervise evening independent living practice (cooking, cleaning, money management, time management, leisure skills) with a safety-first approach Conduct regular walk-throughs of residential areas to identify and address safety concerns (tripping hazards, spills, lighting issues, unsecured doors, etc.) Ensure students are safe during evening routines such as meal prep, chores, recreation, and personal care activities Respond promptly and calmly to emergencies (medical incidents, falls, fire alarms, behavioral crises) following program protocols Facilitate social interactions with students to help establish friendships and a sense of belonging for all students. Assist students with the move-in/out process. Drive students, as required. Other duties as outlined in the position description.
  • QualificationsEducation and
  • Experience: At minimum, a high school diploma required, an associate's degree preferred. One (1) year of experience working with clients with visual impairments or in a caregiving capacity preferred. Valid CA Driver License with a minimum of three (3) years of good driving history and must be approved by the agency’s insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles.
