Position Title: Dual Language Middle School Teacher (Spanish)

Department/Location: Secondary/Prairie Trail Middle School and Frontier Trail Middle School

STATUS: Certified – Contract, Exempt

Position summary

This position is expected to create a dual-language immersion classroom environment. This position is required to provide standards-based instruction in Spanish to predominately non-native Spanish speaking students. Students in the middle school dual-language immersion program will have completed K-5th grade in the immersion program and are in the seventh year of learning in a Spanish-language immersion environment.

Primary duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for creating a dual-language immersion (Spanish) classroom environment that ensures learning and personal growth of every student.
  • Establish an effective rapport with students.
  • Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for future learning.
  • Establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.
  • Instruct students in a classroom which could include students with educational risk factors, as well as students with special needs.
  • Responsible for differentiating instruction for a wide range of developmental needs.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the district curriculum in a way that maximizes student learning.
  • Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all students within his/her teaching assignment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required

  • B.A./B.S. in education
  • Kansas teaching license with secondary certification.
  • Proven experience with understanding students with significant needs and behaviors and how to program for them.
  • Proven ability to form relationships with a wide variety of students and families.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish with a high degree of cultural competency.
  • Possess familiarity with second language acquisition pedagogy.

Preferred

  • One year experience with teaching at the secondary level.
  • Experience working in a school that utilizes a dual-language immersion model
  • Endorsement or certification involving the process of language acquisition such as dual language education, bilingual education, immersion education, or ESOL

Physical requirements

This position requires the performance of light work. The position involves sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing and light lifting. The position also requires the operation of learning technology such as computers, hand-held devices, etc. as well as relevant office equipment.
