About the role

The instructor will teach youth the basics of Taekwondo, including stances, blocks, kicks, strikes, forms, and beginner self-defense concepts in structured, high-energy classes. Key duties also involve maintaining a safe environment, encouraging positive participation, assisting in lesson plan creation, working with volunteers, and tracking program attendance.

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Taekwondo Instructor to join our team.

The YMCA focuses on empowering people in all forms, by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across our neighborhoods.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

As a Taekwondo instructor you will be responsible instructing and engaging youth to participate in taekwondo classes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach the basics of Taekwondo including stances, blocks, basic kicks, strikes, forms, balance, coordination, and beginner self-defense concepts.
  • Lead structured classes that support skill progression for beginners of varying ages.
  • Maintain a safe class environment by teaching proper technique and supervising all activities.
  • Encourage positive participation, cooperation and exemplify our core values.
  • Assist in creating age appropriate lesson plans to ensure fun, high-energy classes.
  • Work alongside volunteers to assist with programming.
  • Track program attendance.

Qualifications

  • Experience practicing or teaching Taekwondo (belt level preferred).
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and engage youth in a group setting.
  • Passion for martial arts and youth development.
  • Strong communication and safety awareness.
  • A commitment to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Positive attitude and previous experience with youth and diverse populations
  • Knowledge and skills in program activities and related sports and office equipment, and the ability to instruct participants in techniques.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications preferred.
  • Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person training as required.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).

Wage

$17.13 to $17.16 per hour, depending on qualifications

Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week

Location: Lakewood Family YMCA, Lakewood, WA

  • Thursdays, 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Job Description

Position Summary

The Youth Sports Staff will instruct class participants in various sports, games, and activities. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

  • Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and assist participants in skill development, game play, and activities appropriate for each age
  • Encourage sportsmanship and teachable moments to implement our core
  • Assist in creating age appropriate lesson plans to ensure fun, high-energy
  • Work alongside volunteers to assist with
  • Follow guidelines for the implementation of the activity
  • Track program
  • Responsible for class participant's supervision and
  • Provide safety briefings to parents and
  • Provide touch cards and in person communication to parents advertising upcoming events and need for class
  • Meet performance measurement by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our
  • Assist staff leadership team in reaching campaign goals through recruiting campaigners, making personal asks and supporting branch events.
  • Cleaning and sanitation protocols will be required of all
  • Staff will be responsible for frequent touchpoint cleaning and sanitizing in specific
  • Staff are expected to adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of
  • Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
  • Minimum of 15 years of age or older.
  • Six months or more of related experience
  • A commitment to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning
  • Positive attitude and previous experience with youth and diverse populations
  • Knowledge and skills in program activities and related sports and office equipment, and the ability to instruct participants in techniques.
