Job Summary

Peer tutors support fellow students in mastering course content through various formats, including homework assistance, test preparation, and skill-building. The goal is to help students develop effective learning strategies and academic confidence. Tutoring may occur in embedded class settings, walk-in sessions, or online formats. Tutors will work individually or in small groups and are expected to document their sessions.

Job Duties

  • Communicate promptly with the coordinator and team
  • Maintain a positive and welcoming attitude toward all students
  • Be punctual, prepared, and engaged during tutoring sessions
  • Practice active listening and provide constructive feedback
  • Encourage student success and celebrate progress
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold the Gateway Student Code of Conduct
  • Exhibit professionalism in behavior, attire, and technology use
  • Utilize appropriate resources and refer students when necessary
  • Consult with the coordinator regarding student progress and concerns
  • Participate in training and professional development
  • Reach out to students referred for tutoring
  • Accurately report hours worked and submit timesheets by the 15th and 30th of each month
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade of A or high B in the course(s) to be tutored
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Two faculty recommendations, preferably from relevant courses
  • Patience, kindness, dependability, and a genuine interest in helping others
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to clearly explain and reinforce course content
  • Prior tutoring experience preferred
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
