About the role

The Instructor develops and delivers instruction for adult learners in foundational academic skills like reading, writing, and mathematics to support goals such as GED attainment and workforce readiness. This role also involves recruiting learners, administering assessments, tracking progress, and collaborating with leadership to refine curriculum and improve program performance.

Position Summary

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor is responsible for developing instruction to adult learners in foundational academic skills, including reading, writing, and mathematics. The instructor supports students in achieving educational goals such as educational gains, GED attainment, workforce readiness, and personal development. This position is also responsible for developing classroom lessons and providing additional individualized academic support to students in Congreso outside of normal classroom hours.

The ABE Instructor is responsible for connecting with Congreso’s Housing and other Divisions to enroll new learners into the ABE classes.

This position is tasked with strengthening core academic skills so they can successfully transition into GED preparation classes and ultimately earn their GED or High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.

This position collaborates with the Adult Education Manager and other agency leadership to develop and refine curriculum and strategize to improve program performance to achieve outcomes.

This role also works closely with the Adult Education Services team to administer GED practice exams and use those results to determine student readiness for referral to GED‑level instruction.

Finally, this position keeps daily attendance records for students and inputs this data into the funder’s and Congreso’s databases.

This position reports to the Manager of Adult Education Initiatives. This is an ONSITE position.

The ABE Instructor applies the principles of the organization’s signature service delivery approach, Primary Client Model (PCM™), by promoting a positive employee/client-focused experience that is appreciative of the unique strengths, values and needs that each individual brings; and by using data to inform and drive decision making. Attention is given to compliance, quality assurance, and best practices as they relate to the role.

Represents Congreso’s mission, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and will be an ambassador of our work.

Collaborates with the Manager and agency leadership to develop the ABE program.

Plans, prepares, and delivers engaging lessons in reading, writing, mathematics, and language arts, aligned with adult education standards.

Recruits and accepts student referrals from Congreso Housing Division and other programs.

Coordinates with the Manager of Adult Education Initiatives and the Adult Education Support Staff to provide intake assessments and register students for ABE classes.

Provides academic advising and guidance regarding educational goals, GED preparation, vocational training, and employment opportunities.

Analyzes students’ progress in class, via CASAS assessments GED Ready practice tests.

Tracks students’ progress, daily attendance, and test results and input them into the funder’s and Congreso’s databases.

Utilizes technology including Microsoft Office software, email, and web-based applications to deliver curriculum.

Serves as coach and mentor to students regarding academic progress, life skills, professionalism, and pursuing post-secondary education / employment.

Works with team members to evaluate student academic progress, identify solutions to students’ academic and social barriers, assess project performance, and participate on selection panel for student internship interviewing.

Works diligently to achieve program outcomes as related to staff performance evaluation.

Attends regular staff, team, divisional, and individual supervisory meetings, as scheduled.

Ensures the appropriate handling of sensitive information and understanding for issues such as confidentiality, domestic abuse, child abuse, and mandated reporter requirements.

Adheres to all Congreso, departmental, programmatic, and security policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Attends all Congreso trainings and in-services as required, including relevant professional groups to maintain professional, requisite knowledge and licensure.

Attends, participates, and facilitates relevant staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals.

Ability to effectively use standard office equipment, including a variety of common software programs such as Office365, UNIDAD, and other customized databases.

Follows through on assignments, works in a timely manner, within established deadlines, and completes special projects specific to the function of the department, as needed or as directed by supervisor.

Demonstrates ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups, in a compassionate, courteous, and respectful manner that fosters an inclusive environment.

Strong written and verbal communication skills including effective and respectful communication with individuals and groups.

Bilingual (Spanish/English) written and verbal skills required.

Supervisory responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum experience, education, and qualifications

Minimum education

Associate’s degree in education or social service-related field required, Bachelor’s degree a plus.

Minimum experience

1-2 years’ experience working as an Adult Basic Education, GED Instructor, or equivalent teaching experience required.

A minimum requirement is an Associate's degree in education or a social service-related field, along with 1-2 years of experience as an Adult Basic Education or GED Instructor. Bilingual skills in Spanish and English (written and verbal) are required for this position.
