Job Description
The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Physical Therapy is currently seeking a full time Physical Therapist Resident to work in Coral Gables, FL. The Physical Therapist Resident assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that assist patients and clients to improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and improve disabling conditions resulting from disease or injury. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Plans, prepares, or carries out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain, and prevent physical dysfunction in patients. Performs and documents initial examinations and evaluates data to identify problems and reach a diagnosis prior to intervention. Records prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in patients’ charts or appropriate database. Reviews physicians’ referrals and patients’ medical records to help determine appropriate diagnosis and physical therapy treatment. Instructs patients and families on how to continue treatment procedures at home. Confers with the patients, medical practitioners, and other stakeholders to plan, implement, and assess intervention programs. Administers manual exercise, massage or traction to help relieve pain, increase patient strength, and decrease or prevent deformity or crippling. Provides educational information about physical therapy, injury prevention, ergonomics, and ways to promote health. Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefit. Tests, measures, and records patients’ strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory or circulatory efficiency. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Department Specific Functions Patient Care – 80% of time: Perform evaluation on new patients, establish goals and develop appropriate treatment plans with the patient in accordance with UMH patient care policies and based on standards of practice established by the APTA. Provide physical therapy treatment in accordance with the established treatment plan effectively and efficiently. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply therapeutic principles and practices. Skillfully and safely progress patients through the levels of treatment within the maximum capabilities of the patient. Document all evaluations, treatments, and other pertinent patient interactions in accordance with UMH policy. Provide relevant education to the patient and/or family regarding the patient’s condition and instruction for home activities. Develop and maintain effective communication with the patient, family, and other members of the rehabilitation team. Communicate with physicians and their staff by phone or in writing. Obtain necessary additional information and suggest revisions in treatment as appropriate. Use treatment tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner. Maintain a satisfactory level of productivity according to clinical standards and demonstrate willingness to adjust personal schedule in case of crisis and real clinic need. Participate in quality and safety improvement activities as directed by the Department Director. Orient, instruct and direct work activities for assistants and support personnel. Supervise and instruct physical therapy students according to professional guidelines. Actively pursue professional growth through affiliation with professional physical therapy associates, workshop attendance and conferences. Understand and follow all UMH policies and procedures. Perform other duties as directed by the Department Director. Other Resident Responsibilities – 20% of time Attend all didactic learning sessions and classes. Completion of assigned reading and written work is expected with product being of post-graduate DPT quality. Attend all assigned mentorship hours with supervising Board Certified clinician (or OCS exam eligible program graduate) to discuss advanced evaluative and treatment techniques in a live patient care environment. Complete all assigned written and live testing requirements. Engage in thoughtful dialogue with residency faculty and peer residents. Participate in assigned rotations for pro-bono clinic, supervising and guiding DPT students.
