About this position

  • Academic Tutor (OMS-II students working with OMS-I students
  • Academic Tutors will be responsible for the following during the duration of the course they are assigned to:
  • Host individual or small group (1 to 3 students) academic tutoring sessions for OMS-I students for the course they are leading. Academic Tutors will facilitate up to 2 hours of academic tutoring per week on Saturday.
  • Host drop-in academic tutoring sessions (similar to open office hours) once a week for two hours in a classroom or learning lab on campus.

Session

  • Individual/Small Group Academic Tutoring Session - Academic Tutors will be paid for up to 30 minutes of preparation time for each 30-minute Academic Tutoring session. During preparation time, Academic Tutors are expected to review the content to be covered in their tutoring session.
  • Office Hours Session - Academic Tutors will be paid for up to 2 hours of preparation time for each 2-hour Office Hours Session. During preparation time, Academic Tutors are expected to prepare materials to review with students during Office Hours, including practice questions, review materials, TrueLearn quizzes, diagrams, worksheets, etc.
  • Meet with OAS staff, course faculty, and other Supplemental Instruction Program staff as needed to help develop coaching plans for Academic Tutoring sessions.
  • Academic Tutors will work an average of 4-14 hours per week for the duration of the course based on the course schedule and the schedule of SI activities developed by the Office of Academic Success. Work hours typically fall during the week before an exam in the assigned course.

  • Bachelor's
  • Current OSU-COM OMS-II student (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Previous tutoring or SI experience is helpful but not required

Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses

• Previously passed all required medical school pre-clinical courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge

Position Requirements

  • No prior history of probation while attending OSU-COM
  • Ability to develop and manage a tutoring session (including Zoom and in-person classrooms)
  • Display a positive and professional attitude
  • Demonstrate an ability to work well within one-on-one and group settings and to motivate students at various levels of academic performance.
