Job purpose
The Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach works collaboratively with the head coach in supporting the team’s goals and objectives. GDS is a member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and the Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference (PTAC). GDS competes in PTAC postseason championships and competes in the NCISAA state series. GDS follows the rules and regulations of the NCISAA and PTAC.
The Assistant Varsity Coach models the GDS Community Cornerstones of Respect, Kindness, Integrity, and Responsibility.
This position has a variable schedule that requires regular evening and possible weekend hours. The 2026 Girls Basketball season officially starts on November 2, 2026. The season concludes February 20, 2027, with the NCISAA State Championships. In addition, the assistant varsity coach will work with the team during off-season workouts and practices within the guidelines of the NCISAA.
Primary responsibilities
- Assists in coaching the team educating students on the rules of the game and proper etiquette following NFHS, PTAC, and GDS guidelines
- Supervises students on bus to away matches, during practices, and home and away contests
- At the discretion of the head coach, may be asked to communicate with parents each week on upcoming practice and game schedule
- Completes and has an understanding of documents and courses related to coaching expectations, concussion awareness, GDS emergency action plans, and sudden cardiac emergency awareness
- Understands the regulations and policies of the NCISAA

- Playing and/or coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, and/or professional level
- Knowledge of rules related to the sport (NFHS and NCISAA)
- CPR Certified (or willingness to complete this certification with GDS support)

- Experience as a positive contributor to a coaching staff and/or athletic department
Working conditions
Daily work requires supervising students indoors as well as outdoors at times including traveling to away contests and events. Some weekend, evening, or early morning work may be required from time to time depending on the season schedule.
Physical requirements
All coaches must be able to provide adequate supervision indoors and outdoors, and they must be able to ensure the safety of students during practices and contests or events. They must be able to move quickly and frequently from standing to sitting with ease and lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities. This position has frequent exposure to loud sounds and high noise levels on a weekly basis.
