Job Description

Job title: Graduate Student Assistant Swim Coach

Department: Athletic Department

Reports to: Head Swim Coach

Purpose of position

The purpose of this position so to assist the head coach in the development and growth of the swim program at Dordt, which will support the mission of the university as well as bring a knowledge and passion of swimming to students, with a commitment to excellence and bringing glory to God.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Assist the head coach with daily swim practices and dryland sessions.
  • Lead assigned practice groups or sets under Head Coach supervision.
  • Provide technical instruction in stroke development, starts, and turns.
  • Support meet preparation, entries, and competition management.
  • Assist with team travel and home meet operations.
  • Communicate with prospective student-athletes as directed by the Head Coach.
  • Help coordinate recruiting visits and maintain recruiting records.
  • Support student-athlete academic success and team culture.
  • Assist with equipment, scheduling, and administrative tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and governing body policies (NAIA)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Athletic Director.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • A clear understanding and commitment to the Reformed perspective and mission of Dordt University and ability to clearly articulate and communicate the mission effectively.
  • Ability to express an active Christian commitment, which shall include identification with a local organized church that holds to beliefs that are consistent with the mission of the university.
  • Prospective members of the Dordt University community are expected to agree with its sexuality, gender identity, and sexual conduct policy which can be found on the DU website (contact the HR Office if you need additional information).
  • Understanding and commitment to the mission of Dordt University.
  • Bachelor’s degree required along with admission to the Dordt University Master’s program.
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate swim skills and fundamentals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with student athletes, athletic officials, and all university constituents.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as a part of a team.
  • Knowledge of NAIA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student athletes.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree and be admitted to the Dordt University Master's program. A commitment to the university's Christian mission and knowledge of swim fundamentals are required.
