Position Summary
Every day hundreds of youth and teens, ages 6 weeks to 17 years, will utilize our Youth Wing within our state-of-the-art Y, engaging in activities and building new relationships with our staff and other participants. The Program Leader I will be part of an amazing staff team which provides enrichment and safe supervision, teaches teamwork and social skills, and supports youth and teens as they grow and learn. They will develop and implement program activities while also building positive relationships by providing prompt and courteous service to members, participants, and guests. Youth Wing staff create positive, nurturing relationships with youth and teens while building cooperative relationships with families. Our programs and teams provide quality experiences to youth and parents that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Essential Functions Adult/Child/Infant CPR & First Aid and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date Oregon Food Handlers certification within 14 days of hire date Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, Prevention Is Better Than Treatment, Introduction to Child Care Health & Safety, and Foundations for Learning training taken within 14 days of hire date Acquire 15 hours of formal training or education annually (1.25 hours per month) related to childcare, of which at least 8 clock hours is in child development, and one hour is in health, safety, and nutrition. Attend New Staff Orientation within 10 days of hire date Follows program lesson plans and implements culturally relevant activities in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the participants Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches to the academic and social development of youth Facilitates a programming environment that invites exploration promotes positive play, and welcomes youth Promotes a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others; maintains ongoing communication with supervisor Demonstrates a working knowledge of the YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies, and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergency procedures. Follows all cleaning and sanitizing protocols Is up-to-date and follows guidelines put forth by the Office of Childcare Checks and responds to email and other communication regularly Actively engaged with youth and activities during the program day Maintains positive relationships and effective communication with families, facility personnel, members, and coworkers Maintains program site and equipment, assists with setup and breakdown of activity centers, and cleaning of program areas Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training Professionally engages with family/guardians to provide pertinent information about their youth’s experience and to promote upcoming programs. May provide guidance to staff overseeing the activities of groups of youth Knows and understands the Youth Wing procedures for safety reasons along with emergency procedures of the building. Must maintain a current, valid Oregon driver’s license, a DMV driving record that meets YMCA standards, and evidence of insurability throughout entire term of employment Other duties as assigned by supervisor As a Y employee, you are a representative of our Y's mission and values. Minimum Qualifications
At least 18 years of age Enrolled in the Child Care Division Central Background Registry (oregonearlylearning.com) and proof of enrollment Please complete the online application right away as it will take several weeks to process Must meet the Office of Child Care requirements for the position: At least 240 hours of qualifying experience working with school-age children in the last five years in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program OR At least an AA Degree in: Early childhood education Child development Elementary education Special education Physical education Recreation Human development Child and family studies Home economics OR At least a Step 8 in the Oregon Registry Professional Competencies Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities The ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from all backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical activity, sexual orientation, etc.). At least 18 months of previous experience working with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, nanny, coaching. Bi-lingual; conversational in Spanish, French, Mandarin or ASL Previous experience planning and implementing group activities Work Environment & Physical Demands Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities such as sports, games and curriculum activities and monitor behavior inside and outside Must be able to walk, run, stand, sit, kneel and get back to a standing position Ability to lift and carry the weight of 50lbs General housekeeping: mop/sweep, take the trash out, wash dishes, clean tables, toys, stack and put baskets away, and the like Diapering Follow all sanitation protocols Hours of Operation / Shift Options YMCA PlayZone/KidZone (ages 6 weeks-10years) will be open: Monday - Friday 8:00am-8:00pm Saturday & Sunday 8:00am-6:00pm Creation Station/Corner Hut (ages 11-17 years) will be open: Monday - Friday 10:00am-9:00pm) Saturday 10:00am-8:00pm Sunday 10:00am-7:00pm Must be available to work weekends, event nights, and flexible work hours to suit varied schedule for programs.
