- Range: $67,567.00 - $158,280.00 Salary/yearThe Health/Physical Education (Health/PE) teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-aligned instruction in health and physical education that promotes physical literacy, personal wellness, and social-emotional development for students in grades 9-12. The teacher will foster a safe and supportive environment that encourages lifelong healthy habits and teamwork. Essential Responsibilities Content Knowledge and Planning Demonstrate knowledge of health and physical education standards and best practices. Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum and lesson plans aligned to New York State and national health/PE standards. Integrate a variety of instructional methods including technology, fitness-based activities, and health education strategies. Collaborate with school staff to align wellness initiatives and address student needs. Instructional Strategies Facilitate active, engaging lessons that promote student fitness and health literacy. Incorporate individual and team-based physical activities that accommodate diverse abilities. Teach essential health topics such as nutrition, mental health, substance abuse prevention, and human development. Encourage skill development in coordination, movement, decision-making, and teamwork. Assessment Use formative and summative assessments to track student progress in both health and physical education. Provide constructive feedback to students and adjust instruction to meet learning needs. Maintain accurate records of student achievement and participation. Student Communication and Rapport Promote a positive, inclusive environment where all students feel valued. Communicate clearly with students about learning goals and expectations. Demonstrate enthusiasm for wellness and serve as a role model for healthy behaviors. Classroom and Gym/Field Management Ensure safety in all physical education settings, equipment usage, and student conduct. Monitor and manage transitions between activities and instructional spaces. Enforce behavioral expectations consistently and fairly. Professional Demeanor and Development Maintain professional appearance and conduct. Participate in school-wide and departmental professional development. Seek out new strategies and curriculum enhancements for physical and health education. School Community and Culture Support school events and wellness activities. Engage with families to promote student wellness outside of school. Collaborate with colleagues to support a culture of health and fitness. Knowledge and skills Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Knowledge of adolescent development and health-related topics. Ability to design safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate physical activities. Proficiency in fitness technology and educational tools. Effective classroom and time management. QualificationsRequired Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Physical Education, or a related field. NYS Certification or in-progress certification in Health or Physical Education. Minimum of two years of prior teaching experience. Preferred Education and Experience Master’s Degree in Health Education, Physical Education, or a related field. Experience teaching in grades 8-12, particularly in urban settings.
