Job description

Description SUMMARY The Child Care Worker is responsible for the well-being of the children under their care. They are responsible for monitoring the children at all times to ensure that they play and interact with one another in a safe and appropriate manner.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Must be working towards to have 45 hours of DCF training.
  • Cares for and attends to the needs of children at the facility including feeding, changing, and monitoring their activities and playtime.
  • The position requires working with children of the age infant through five-year-olds, with the scheduling of covering breaks as needed.
  • Plans and organizes games and recreational activities for children in a group setting.
  • Plans and teaches activities such as arts and crafts, designed to improve fine and gross motor skills.
  • Encourages children’s emotional, social, and physical development, and positive self-concept.
  • Monitors signs of emotional and developmental issues in children and notifies parents, guardians, or authorities of concerns when necessary.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate disciplinary measures to maintain control in the classroom and facility.
  • Teaches children personal and healthy habits such as eating, resting, and personal hygiene.
  • Cleans and sanitizes toys, furniture, and play equipment.
  • Maintains records on individual children including daily observations, activities, meals served, and medications administered.
  • Often communicates with the children’s parents and contacting them in case of an emergency.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience working with children preferred. Able to prioritize and meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality. Must be working towards to have 45 hours of DCF training.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES Enthusiastic and positive attitude. Excellent communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed mostly indoors in an environmentally controlled setting. Work is to be performed directly on school or parish campuses. Works frequently in close physical proximity to others and may encounter work in enclosed or tight spaces.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar.
  • Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (30 pounds).
