About the Role
This role supports the overall health and safety of acute psychiatric patients through medication administration, health assessments, infection control, documentation, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and consultation with direct care staff
- Key responsibilities
- Complete nursing assessments and documentation within required timelines.
- Perform ongoing assessments and monitor vital signs per policy.
- Administer medications, including psychotropic and PRN medications, and document accurately.
- Monitor infection control, respond to injuries and emergencies, and provide first aid as needed.
- Communicate with physicians, guardians, and treatment teams regarding patient health.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all medical interventions, orders, and records.
- Partner with the staff nutritionist to meet patient dietary needs and report allergies.
- Participate in treatment planning, staff training, and patient education groups.
- Assist with lab specimen collection and ensure timely pharmacy coordination.
- Support safety and wellbeing by following all KVC procedures and protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent nursing degree
- Experience or training in pediatric mental and behavioral health nursing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Strong understanding of child development and common pediatric mental health disorders
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMHN) or Pediatric Nursing (CPN)
- Experience in school-based or educational health programs
- Training in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention
- Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and 504 plans
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Skills for success
- Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
- Effective communication and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to respond calmly and confidently to behavioral health crises
- Excellent documentation and organizational skills
