Job summary

The Instructional Aide will assist children in the classroom.

  • Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Assists in the training and education of individuals in the areas of social development, self-help skills, leisure activities, vocational skills, and academics relevant to the individual or Individual Educational Plan and extra-curricular activities.
  • Develops materials for students to use during training and education activities.
  • Assists the instructor in maintaining discipline in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria and playground in accordance with Board policies and regulations.
  • Works with individual students as assigned by classroom instructor and performs duties as directed by the instructor or assigned by the principal.
  • Assists students in outside day programming activities such as bowling, swimming, outings and other activities. Performs assigned delegated nursing tasks including feeding, changing and administering medications.
  • Assists students with mobility, physical and clothing needs, and in positioning, feeding, toileting, and personal hygiene. Assists students when getting on and off transportation vehicles. Observes all safety and health rules, procedures and universal precautions.
  • Assists the instructor in maintaining training and attendance records, and recording data for use with IEP. May be required to collect and record individual’s money while they are at school.
  • Provides and maintains documentation in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Deals effectively with aggressive and/or physical behaviors as well as possible other physical incidents in accordance with approved behavior plans and techniques.
  • Maintains confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information including the confidentiality of contacted information and materials.
  • Performs duties to performance standards, and complies with policies and applicable requirements. Displays teamwork and cooperation when working with management and peers.
  • Works effectively with, or around, individuals with disabilities and their family members or guardians. Models appropriate social and ethical behavior.
  • Attends in-service trainings as required to remain up-to-date on issues relative to duties and responsibilities.
  • Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance, and works overtime as approved to meet workload demands.

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION Files information that includes personal histories, medical histories and other confidential or sensitive information of individuals served.

WORKING CONDITIONS Frequently works in good working conditions, typical to a school environment. May be exposed to inclement weather driving conditions. May be required to lift, carry or move individuals, including children, adolescents and adults in a safe manner, according to in-service training. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens, communicable diseases, and/or individuals with aggressive behavior.

Qualifications

This position requires that an applicant possess a specified level of education, training and/or experience that is required by law or regulation to perform this job, including a mandated license, registration or certification. Some positions may require possession of the license, registration or certification as a condition. High School degree or equivalent, and a background that meets requirements for earning and possessing an Educational Aide permit issued by the Ohio Department of Education.
