Position Summary

English Teacher The English Teacher is responsible for creating a dynamic, student-centered learning environment that fosters a love of literature, writing, critical thinking, and communication. The successful candidate will inspire students through engaging instruction, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to the mission and values of the independent school community. This position includes teaching English courses, advising students, collaborating with colleagues, and actively participating in the broader life of the school. Essential Responsibilities: Teaching & Learning Teach English courses aligned with departmental goals and school standards. Design engaging lessons that develop students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and analytical skills. Foster thoughtful classroom discussion and intellectual curiosity. Differentiate instruction to support a range of learners and learning styles. Provide timely and constructive feedback on student work. Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate regularly with students and families. Curriculum & Collaboration Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, interdisciplinary initiatives, and departmental planning. Integrate a variety of instructional methods, technology tools, and assessment practices. Stay current with best practices in English education and adolescent development. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school initiatives. Student Support & Community Engagement Serve as a student advisor and support students’ academic and personal growth. Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Contribute to the school community through extracurricular involvement, clubs, coaching, or other activities. Uphold and model the school’s mission, values, and standards of professionalism. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred. Teaching experience at the middle school and/or upper school level preferred. NYS Certification preferred Strong background in literature, writing instruction, and grammar. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to connect with students and foster an inclusive classroom environment. Commitment to collaboration, innovation, and continuous professional growth.
