About the role

Maintain active surveillance of the pool area to ensure a safe swimming environment for all individuals. Respond immediately to emergency situations and perform regular equipment and chemical checks in accordance with YMCA policies.

In the course of a year, we provide more than 3,000 children, ages 6 weeks through Pre-K with high-quality literacy and STEAM-infused learning; give 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatics, day and resident camps, teen leadership development programs, and employment opportunities; provide over 200,000 members with programs, services, and facilities to enjoy connection and maintain wellness regardless of age; and engage over 25,000 volunteers and donors from across Atlanta to share in the gift of supporting their communities.

NATURE AND SCOPE: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to): Support the lifeguard in maintaining active surveillance of the pool area.

Know and review all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, completes related reports as required.

Know, understand, and consistently support safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.

Remain calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.

Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.

Support equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.

Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.

Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.

Qualifications

Minimum age of 15 Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration Current Lifeguard Certification Additional trainings as assigned within first week of work Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness. Requirements

Candidates must be at least 15 years old and hold current Lifeguard, CPR/AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications. Must be physically and mentally capable of performing all lifeguard skills and pass a pre-employment background check.
