The Middle School Counselor provides direct counseling, crisis response, and wellness programming to support the social, emotional, and developmental well-being of students. They collaborate with families, faculty, and administrators to foster an inclusive learning environment and facilitate referrals to outside providers.
Experience in an independent school setting Experience with adolescent anxiety, depression, executive functioning, and social-emotional learning Experience with threat assessment, crisis response, and risk assessment protocols Familiarity with student information systems and educational support documentation ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES The Middle School Counselor assists the Director of Student Support and the Middle School Counseling Team in the following areas: Student Counseling & Support Provides individual and small-group counseling services to students Supports student well-being through proactive intervention and skill development Manages crisis intervention and response efforts Assesses student needs and facilitates referrals to outside providers when appropriate Wellness Programming & Prevention Designs and implements developmentally appropriate wellness programming Promotes healthy conversations surrounding mental health and emotional well-being Fosters a culture of student support, resilience, and self-advocacy Consultation & Collaboration Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, nurses, and other support personnel regarding student needs Collaborates with divisional counselors, chaplains, deans, and student support personnel to ensure continuity of care Coaches and supports faculty and staff in implementing strategies that promote student well-being Professional Leadership Monitors emerging trends, research, and best practices in adolescent counseling and student wellness Provides guidance regarding evidence-based interventions and support strategies Participates in school-wide student support initiatives and programs Community Engagement Supports advisory, mentoring, leadership, affinity, and student engagement programs Participates in school events and activities to maintain visibility and connection with students Contributes to the broader life of the school through activities, programs, or other community involvement Other Duties Perform other duties as assigned PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and frequently walks on slippery or uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is often loud. Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus. TRAVEL Travel is primarily local during the regular business day. Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required and is associated mainly with planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities. Candidates must hold a master's degree in counseling, pass the National Counselor Examination, and possess current Georgia state licensure or certification. Experience working with adolescents and proficiency in Google G Suite are required.
