Position Summary
The primary role of the Flower Mound School Nurse is to support students’ health and wellbeing for students to fully participate in active school life. The School Nurse is a caring, compassionate, experienced professional who loves taking care of children and prioritizes communication and engagement. The position requires administrative work as well as one-on-one time with students. This includes responding to any medical concerns at school, performing routine screenings, maintaining records, and certifying all campus Faculty/Staff in CPR/AED and First Aid.

Essential Job Functions
Student Health
1. Identify and document students with health needs. Distribute class information to each coach/teacher per grade level using Excel.
- 2. Manage Student and Faculty Medical needs
- Keep all medications “in date” and locked. A duplicate key should be made available to the Front Office Manager for times you are not available. All medicines must be placed in a secure place at the front desk or for emergency medications.
- EpiPen should be stored in the secure place for students that require them.
- For diabetic students, extra diabetic equipment should be kept in the secure place.
- Maintain Medication Administration Permission forms
- The permission form should be used for one-time dosage, daily medication and medications kept for emergency use.
- The signed form must be on file for students potentially needing to use an inhaler or an EpiPen. Texas law allows the student to carry an Inhaler or an EpiPen with them for use.
- Maintain Medical Logs – campuses must log when medicines are dispensed.
- Maintain Faculty/Staff Emergency Information
- Familiarize self with all medications for students, including EpiPen Jr. and EpiPen.
- Have self-carry forms in place for all students carrying their EpiPen. Understand use and dosage of EpiPen Jr. and EpiPen.
- Secure FARE (Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency) Care Plan.
- Secure self-carry authorization for inhalers and any other medication carried by students.
- Secure diabetes care plans as needed.
- Maintain Incident Reports – Incident reports must be completed if incident occurs during school or CDA sponsored extracurricular activities and requires or potentially requires additional medical attention. A copy is sent home with student, District Nurse Coordinator and another is sent to Business Office for insurance purposes.
- Communicate with Headmaster regarding communicable epidemics and recommend class/school closings if related absences exceed 40%.
- Use Head Injury Protocol provided by CDC for any head injury you feel may be subject to concussion – mild or severe. Send copy home with student, to the District Nurse Coordinator, and to Human Resources.
- Assure that AEDs are properly maintained. All AEDs should be checked monthly for operating batteries and in date pads and large battery. Green light must be flashing. Batteries (9-volt) must be replaced during Daylight Saving Time weeks (spring and fall) each year.
3. Communicate school policy regarding the medical needs of the CDA students and staff in accordance with state and federal laws.
4. Communicate health policies and forms to Flower Mound Campus families
5. Ensure that Tuesday/Thursday Front Office Manager and Aide(s) are equipped to meet daily student health needs when the School Nurse is not present.
Faculty: and Staff CPR, AED, and First Aid Training
- 1. Ensure that all Flower Mound Campus employees are CPR, AED and First Aid Certified
- Provide CPR, AED and First Aid training to Flower Mound Campus employees
- Renewed Biannually
- Assure coaches and faculty taking students off campus are CPR/AED and First Aid certified.
- School Nurse enters names of students completing course into AHA Instructor site.
- Maintain Excel spreadsheet with dates of all employees. Notify updates as needed.
2. Provide medical expertise as a member of the Crisis Management Team.
Immunization Records and Reporting
- 1. Maintain in Nurse’s Aide current immunization records as required by the Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Students in grades K-12 and Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Child-Care Facilities for PreK.
- Import Student information into Nurse’s Aide annually in May. New student immunization records must be entered manually. Immunization records for new students are requested as part of the application process. Students will not attend class until complete records are turned in. Per Texas State law this also applies to returning students on the first day of class.
- Send reminders, update and/or follow-up with:
- Non-compliant students
- Exemptions – maintain current Exemption Affidavits. Requires renewal every 2 years
- 7th grade – students need additional immunizations. Send an email to all 6th grade parents in March as a reminder to update immunizations before school starts in August.
- 2. Ensure that all student physical medical files are audit ready
- Non-compliant student files are flagged. An email is immediately sent to the parent listing all needed vaccines.
- Students are entered into Nurse’s Aide as they apply.
3. Prepare and submit Annual Immunization Report to Texas Department of Health
Screening Records and Reporting
- 1. Administer state required screenings
- The School Nurse must be certified by the state to perform screening.
- Texas requires screenings to be performed within the first 120 days of school.
- Screenings administered are: Vision, Hearing, Scoliosis and Acanthosis Negricans and are grade specific (Attachment 3 www.dshs.state.tx.us/vhs/require.shtm [http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/vhs/require.shtm] ).
- Communicate with parents appropriately.
- Calibrate the CDA audiometer annually. This is done through The Department of State Health Services in Arlington, TX.
- 2. Prepare and submit the Annual Screening Report to the Texas Department of Health.
- Annual Report for Hearing, Vision and Scoliosis are due June 30th.
- Annual Report for Acanthosis Negrican is due May 31st
Additional Duties & Requirements
- Requires professional dress.
- Communicate Authorized Absence requests to the Headmaster’s designee.
- School Nurse is accountable for staying within their budget.
Education: Current RN or LVN license
Experience
1. Previous medical experience.
2. Certified American Heart Association CPR/First Aid Instructor (may be completed after accepting position)
3. Certified by the state of Texas to perform required student screenings (may be completed after accepting position)
