Responsibilities
This is a 5-year grant-funded position, supporting the NYS DOH Healthcare Education and Life Skills award and participants in the University of Rochester Career Pathways program. This grant aims to foster successful program completion for students enrolled in surgical technologist, radiology technologist, and dental assistant training programs. This position is a dual role. The Academic Advisor and Coach supports incumbent employees pursuing academic programs in Surgical Technology and Radiologic Technology, and external candidates entering Eastman Institute for Oral Health’s on-the-job Dental Assistant training program. This role provides comprehensive academic advising and coaching services, utilizing tools such as the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) and LIFE101 assessments to identify strengths and areas for development necessary for the successful completion of training programs. The Advisor and Coach assigns follow-up training or other interventions to enhance students' learning strategies, personal development, and professional readiness based on assessment results, as well as provides general coaching and support throughout the training program to help ensure completion. In partnership with the Assistant Director, this role will develop and coordinate a Student Advisory Board to ensure that assessment activities and program offerings effectively meet the needs of employees entering training to become dental assistants, radiologic technologists and surgical technologists. This position is funded until 12/31/30. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Academic advising Reviews and evaluates prior academic transcripts for readiness Provide guidance on academic program requirements, pre-requisite course requirements, and clinical training for employees pursuing Surgical Technology and Radiologic Technology program Monitor academic progress, address challenges, and connect students with resources to support their success. May help support other participants in Career Pathways program, as requested Coaching and Mentorship Administer and interpret LASSI and LIFE101 assessments to identify learning strategies and areas for growth, implementing follow-up training or other resources to enhance skills. Support students in preparing for clinical rotations, certification exams, and professional development opportunities. Collaborates with Preceptor for Dental Assistant Education and Workforce Development to support dental assistant student success Student Advocacy and Support Serve as a resource and advocate for students navigating academic, personal, and professional challenges. Connect students with campus and external community resources to promote engagement and success. Develop and coordinate HELP Grant Student Advisory Board. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain accurate records of student interactions, assessments, and progress using university systems. Using assessment data and Student Advisory Board feedback, prepare reports to evaluate program effectiveness. Works closely with Assistant Director and grant program evaluator to measure project success and impact MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE A bachelor’s degree required. 2 years experience in the areas of career navigation, career coaching and/or academic advising as workforce development strategies. Healthcare experience preferred. or equivalent combination of education and experience KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint); strong organizational skills; strong written and verbal communication skills; required.
